Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Lessons in General Science This set of laboratory exercises in general science is an outgrowth of courses given by the author in methods of teaching secondary school sciences. Some of the lessons represent the combined efforts of a class upon an assigned topic, but SO reshaped that credit to any individual is out of question. Free use has been made of material from the author's Lessons in Astronomy, Chemistry, Nature Study, and Physics - manuals prepared for his own class work. Many of the exercises have enough material for more than one lesson, and Should be subdivided to suit teaching conditions. The preparation of these lessons was stimulated by the belief that one chief cause of failure to get desired results with beginning classes in the high school sciences lay in the character of the material chosen. It was believed possible to bring together from scattered sources that which would appeal to beginners and which would find its unity in their life experiences and interests. This involved the rejection of much material of great worth from the differentiated high school sciences that is un suited for an elementary course. Teachers subject to the exactions of schoolroom service do not have the time to make selections of material and properly to relate and adapt them for use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual for Work in General Science Laboratory work and the experiences of home and school furnish an important basis for the course in general science. The following outlines for experiments and demonstrations have been developed so as to include the exercises which have proved most valuable for use in the first year of the high school. The outlines are the result of the cooperative work of several high-school teachers through a period of years, and have been tried with more than a thousand pupils. Experiments other than those here included have been tried, but through constant trial, elimination, and addition the work has assumed its present form. It is the purpose of the outlines to direct the pupils into the habit of finding out about many kinds of common problems in science. To do this in the best way common materials are used for experi mentation, since common and simple phenomena are likely to be more educative for young pupils than those which are uncommon and complex. The materials needed are listed in connection with each exercise. It is hoped that teachers will encourage pupils to use their own initiative in devising new ways to perform the experiments, as well as in working out additional problems which are sure to be suggested in the discussion of the experiments here outlined. At the close of the directions for work, one or more additional problems are suggested, and the use of these as topics for discussion will make the work more valuable. The exercises have been planned so that each one requires a shorter period of continuous atten tion than is usually true in the more advanced laboratory work in high-school science. Experience has shown that first-year pupils work more effectively when the units of work assigned are relatively short and definite. This plan results in a larger number of exercises than would be used in a more advanced course inscience. In many cases, however, two or more exercises may be performed in a single laboratory period. Supplementary or alternative experiments, which sometimes require more complex apparatus, are often given. These supplementary experiments are indicated by the same arabic number as the preceding experiment, but with a letter added. Thus 22a is an experiment which may be used in addition to or instead of Exercise 22. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Considerable new mate rial on nutrition and proper care of the human body is added. Particular attention has been given to relations which the studies bear to household problems as well as to those of the community and of the industries. At the beginning of each chapter a list of Questions for Discussion is given. It is expected that when beginning the work of each chapter the pupils and teacher will read and discuss the questions briefly. These questions recall pupils' previous experiences and set up new problems whose brief consideration gives significant purpose to the text and experimental work which follows. After the chapter has been studied, the questions provide the best means of review. About fifty additional illustrations are included. The authors, a scientist and a psychotherapist, draw on principles of group and behavioral psychology but speak to scientists in their own language about their own experiences. They offer in-depth, practical advice, real-life examples, and exercises tailored to scientific and technical workplaces on topics as diverse as conflict resolution, negotiation, dealing with supervision, working with competing peers, and making the transition from academia to industry." "This is a uniquely valuable contribution to the scientific literature, on a subject of direct importance to lab heads, postdocs, and students. It is also required reading for senior staff concerned about improving efficiency and effectiveness in academic and industrial research."--BOOK JACKET

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Laboratory Course in Chemistry The course of practical chemistry outlined in this book is intended for students who are beginning the subject and at the same time taking a course of lectures on general chemistry. It was arranged primarily for the first year Arts course of the University of Toronto, in which all science students - whether they are taking chemistry for two years only or whether they intend to specialise in this subject - are required to do exactly the same work in their first year. It has been necessary therefore to keep in view the twofold object of giving the former class of students, in a very limited period, as fair an idea as possible of the general nature of chemistry, and at the same time, of providing the latter class with a good working basis for their subsequent course. Owing to the short time spent in the laboratory (two afternoons a week) many important principles have been necessarily omitted. The principles especially emphasised, however, are those which, on account of their inherent difficulty or of some traditional error in previous instruction, generally appear to give most trouble to the student. Particular emphasis has been laid on the importance of the quantitative side of chemistry. Where purely qualitative experiments have been introduced it has been done largely with a view to relieving the over-crowding at a too limited number of balances (one to five students). Especial attention has also been given to the method of note-keeping in the laboratory, as it is believed that the habit of accurately and honestly recording all observations is one of the most important results of a laboratory training. The use of Arabic numerals has been avoided in numbering the experiments and sections of the book, so as to prevent confusion with the student's individual system of numbering in his note book, where Arabic figures are the more convenient. Although much has necessarily been left to personal instruction, it is intended that the student shall follow all the directions given in the book. These have been purposely distributed among the theoretical discussions so that they cannot be found without careful reading. More concise explanations of some of the fundamental principles, together with a few extra experiments, are given in the appendix. With a view to encouraging resourcefulness, the apparatus used has been restricted to the simplest possible kind. The experiments on qualitative analysis (pages 50-58) are intended only to show the principles and difficulties of such work. It differs from similar courses in four ways: first, it contains Exercises in addition to the usual Experiments; second, it requires the use of the common weights and measures side by side with the metric weights and measures; third, it permits the use of much apparatus familiar to the student; and fourth, it encourages the student to set up a laboratory in his own home. The Exercises help the student to appreciate how physics is applied in his home and in his environment in general. The Exercises and Experiments together complement the classroom work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in General Chemistry The mison dletre for the book is simply that of facilitating work inthe laboratory by having before the student only such matter as is necessary for the work in hand. It has been the endeavor of the compiler to include only such experiments as are truly instructive and well illustrate the subject, and which lead up easily and naturally to a knowledge of the science. The book is to be used in a laboratory in which an instructor is always present with the class to furnish such individual direction as may be necessary. Most of the experiments should be performed on the lecture table before they are attempted by the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been somewhat spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature-study in the elementary schools and that all are requiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Physics a Students Manual for Colleges, and Scientific Schools This Manual is designed to be a student's handbook for the performance of experimental problems in physics. The selection of problems and their treatment is the result of twelve years of teaching experience, and the descriptions of most of the exercises have been used in typewritten form for.the past six years. The grade of work is that of the course in general physics in colleges and technical schools. It is presumed that the student has had a course in preparatory laboratory physics, and that these exer cises will be accompanied, or preceded, by a full course of lec tures and recitations in general physics, including instruction in the principles and manipulations of the various experimental operations. One hundred and twen ty-eight exercises are described. Some of these, however, such as reading the barometer, determining the heat equivalent of a calorimeter, etc., are usually performed in connection with other problems. There is a break in the serial numbers of the exercises at the end of each part, to permit the assignment of numbers to additional exercises in their proper groups. The definite problems given under each heading have been formulated with much care, to cover as wide a range of the subject as is possible. They are based upon the work of the sophomore class in the Case School of Applied Science, and each one represents what may be expected of one or two students in a laboratory exercise of three hours' duration. Shorter exercises, or exercises covered by particular articles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Elementary Practical Biology: A Laboratory Guide for High-School and College Students For the purpose of developing in the student the power of independent observation, to teach him that the source of all knowledge is not the book rather than the specimen, that there is a great deal to be seen besides that which the book describes, and that he is not to consider that, though his observations may not agree with those of the book, the latter must, necessarily, be right-these are the reasons why this guide has been written. The guide consists essentially of questions on the gross and minute structure and on the physiology of a series of common animals and plants which are typical of their kind - questions which can be answered only by actual examination of the specimen or by perform ance of the experiment. Directions are given for the collection of specimens, for their preservation, and for preparing them for examination, also for performing simple physiological experiments. Particular species are not required, as the questions usually apply equally well to several related forms. The material of which the guide is composed has been gradually accumulated during an experience of nearly seven years of teaching high-school and college classes, consisting of students of both sexes and of ages vary ing from fourteen to fifty years. With the exception of a few additions made while preparing the manual for printing, all of the work herein detailed has been per formed by college students, and a very large part by students in the second year of their high-school course. Although it is thought that the topics are so arranged and the questions so worded that any one of average intelligence can study any or all of the organisms given, still it is not intended that the guide shall supersede the instructor, but, rather, aid him. The student will always require the advice and suggestions of his teach er, who will need to point out many of the structures which here are only named, and which it would be im possible to describe so that the student could find them for himself, without defeating the very object which the guide seeks to attain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Biology for Students in General, Medical and Technical Courses IN this edition the general plan of the previous editions is retained but made more logical by bringing forward the chapters on plants so that the value to be derived from the evolutionary point of view can be employed in the study of the plant types discussed. The chapter on hydra is shifted for a similar reason. The section dealing with the biology of cells (chapters VIII - XI) has been entirely rearranged and extended in order that it may furnish a better foundation for the present-day conception of biology. The laboratory suggestions at the beginning of each chapter are omitted and attention is called to Laboratory Outlines by Hargitt and Hargitt which meets the needs of those wishing laboratory directions for the present edition. This book may be secured by writing directly to Professor C. W. Hargitt, Syracuse University, Syracuse, N. Y. The historical development of biology, typified in large part by the emphasis which certain great men placed first upon one aspect of living things and then upon another, affords a natural approach to our subject: Linnaeus (1707 - 17 78) emphasized the external form of organisms, while Haller (1708 - 1777) inquired into the general physiological activities of living things. These two men may be given credit for defining the two lines of study, morphology and physiology, which enter so largely into all modern courses in biology.
