Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry The experiments outlined in this manual are designed primarily for college students who have not had a course in chemistry in a preparatory school. The exercises represent the laboratory work of a comparatively brief introductory course in General Chemistry. The experiments are to be conducted under the guidance of an instructor, and are to be supplemented by class-room demonstrations in connection with recitations from a text-book in General Chemistry for college students, or by illustrated lectures and text-book assignments. Frequently the experiments do not furnish sufficient information to enable the student to answer some of the questions and make the explanations that are to appear in his notebook. The necessary information can generally be obtained from the text-book, and it is my plan to have the student use the text-book and laboratory outline as companion volumes in the laboratory. To facilitate the students progress in this connection page references to two widely used texts have been inserted. My experience goes to show that the student will thus make very efficient use of his time, that he will give care and thought to his work, and that the laboratory work can be successfully made the central feature of instruction in the course. In preparing the experiments, the substances chosen for study have purposely been limited to avoid scattering the students efforts. Intensive, rather than extensive, study has been the underlying idea in sleeting the exercises. Extended experiments on the metallic elements have not been included, as I feel that this work should be undertaken in Analytical Chemistry, and be allotted some of the time so largely used for laboratory practice in following a scheme of separations. I fully realize the value of practice in the identification of unknown substances, and this feature of laboratory work has been duly emphasized, and, it is hoped, in a manner which preserves its educational value. Emphasis has also been placed upon the general reactions of acids, bases, and salts, the processes of oxidation and reduction, and chemical changes prominent in everyday life. Book excerpt: For students, DIY hobbyists, and science buffs, who can no longer get real chemistry sets, this one-of-a-kind guide explains how to set up and use a home chemistry lab, with step-by-step instructions for conducting experiments in basic chemistry -- not just to make pretty colors and stinky smells, but to learn how to do real lab work: Purify alcohol by distillation Produce hydrogen and oxygen gas by electrolysis Smelt metallic copper from copper ore you make yourself Analyze the makeup of seawater, bone, and other common substances Synthesize oil of wintergreen from aspirin and rayon fiber from paper Perform forensics tests for fingerprints, blood, drugs, and poisons and much more From the 1930s through the 1970s, chemistry sets were among the most popular Christmas gifts, selling in the millions. But two decades ago, real chemistry sets began to disappear as manufacturers and retailers became concerned about liability. ,em>The Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments steps up to the plate with lessons on how to equip your home chemistry lab, master laboratory skills, and work safely in your lab. The bulk of this book consists of 17 hands-on chapters that include multiple laboratory sessions on the following topics: Separating Mixtures Solubility and Solutions Colligative Properties of Solutions Introduction to Chemical Reactions & Stoichiometry Reduction-Oxidation (Redox) Reactions Acid-Base Chemistry Chemical Kinetics Chemical Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's Principle Gas Chemistry Thermochemistry and Calorimetry Electrochemistry Photochemistry Colloids and Suspensions Qualitative Analysis Quantitative Analysis Synthesis of Useful Compounds Forensic Chemistry With plenty of full-color illustrations and photos, Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments offers introductory level sessions suitable for a middle school or first-year high school chemistry laboratory course, and more advanced sessions suitable for students who intend to take the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry exam. A student who completes all of the laboratories in this book will have done the equivalent of two full years of high school chemistry lab work or a first-year college general chemistry laboratory course. This hands-on introduction to real chemistry -- using real equipment, real chemicals, and real quantitative experiments -- is ideal for the many thousands of young people and adults who want to experience the magic of chemistry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual Experiments to Illustrate the Elementary, Principles of Chemistry This book is written for the use of college students of general chemistry. In attendance on lectures in general chemistry there are students who may be put in three groups, although these groups are not distinct. For those who are beginning the study, the required experiments have been arranged. In this part, experiments on a few typical elements have been first introduced that their properties may illustrate the fundamental ideas of chemistry. These are followed by experiments on the remaining common elements so arranged as to lead from the study of elements of simple relations to those of more complex relations, while keeping together as far as possible those elements of similar chemical properties. Along with these required experiments a few others have been introduced, which are for the most part exercises in preparing substances of such marked physical properties that their purification and identification require no knowledge of analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of General Chemistry: With Experiments In the preparation of this book the author has used a part of his work, "Experimental and Analytical Chemistry," now out of print, and has added enough new matter to make of it a complete text-book of elementary general chemistry, sufficient for the wants of college students beginning the subject. In too many instances the student is introduced to qualitative analysis as his first laboratory work, and this is followed by gravimetric analysis to complete a course. This plan certainly gives the beginner a distorted idea of the relative importance of analytical chemistry in the study of the science; for the beginner a knowledge of the properties of a substance, the methods of its preparation and its uses is far more important than acquaintance with methods of separation, and general illustrative experiments should, therefore, be made the foundation work in the laboratory. It is the belief of the author that much that is demonstrated by the teacher in the classroom may profitably be repeated by the student in the laboratory. Repetition is necessary to fix elementary principles thoroughly in the mind of the beginner. The list of experiments here offered embraces the work of this character which has been required in the authors classes during the past ten years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for Elementary Chemistry: Designed to Accompany a d104book of Chemistry by W. A. Noyes The importance of the laboratory work in a course in elementary chemistry cannot be too strongly emphasized. It is only by the actual contact and experimentation with some of the many materials described in a text-book that the student ever comes to any realizing sense of the means by which the science of chemistry has been built up. For this reason it is advisable to supplement the laboratory exercises with discussions of an explanatory nature, in which the correlation between laboratory and text-book work may be brought out. The experiments described in this guide have been chosen with the following objects in mind: To reduce the variety of materials handled, consequently the confusion of many new names and strange materials, to a minimum; to make each experiment a fairly exhaustive study of some particular material or property; to have the sequence of experiments such as will lead to a certain amount of reasoning from analogy. This guide does not pretend to be an exhaustive description of elementary experiments, but rather a selection of a few suitable, consecutive experiments from the many possible. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the many helpful suggestions and criticisms which I have received from Drs. C. W. Balke, C. H. Hecker, S. B. Hopkins and W. A. Noyes in the preparation of this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
