Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renewable Energy Technologies: Their Applications in Developing Countries presents an overview and assessment of technologies for energy-related projects in the rural sector of developing countries. This book discusses the important, but not dominant, role that new and renewable sources of energy (NARSE) will have in the Third World. Bioenergy fuel sources come from wood fuel, energy crops, agricultural residue and organic wastes, peat, biomass briquettes, biogas, and animal power. The text also describes the problems related to operating biomass engines and to the production of engine fuels such as alcohol fuels, vegetable oil, producer gas made from wood and charcoal. These problems concern land use and site location for growing these fuel crops, government policies or subsidies, as well as competition with prevailing petrol prices. Solar water heaters and photovoltaic cells can be used by households and in bigger institutions; ongoing technological developments mainly focus on cutting down costs and better manufacturing methods. The book also addresses other NARSE such as hydro, wind, and water power generation. This book is suitable for economists, environmentalists, ecologists, and policy makers involved in energy conservation and rural development.

Book Synopsis World Nitrogen Survey by : William F. Sheldrick
Download or read book World Nitrogen Survey written by William F. Sheldrick and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen is an important raw material for the chemical and fertilizer industries. Almost all nitrogen products are derived from ammonia, and about 85 percent goes to fertilizer use. This report examines the world nitrogen industry and its outlook through 1995/96. Although the nitrogen fertilizer industry grew very rapidly during the 1960s, it recently declined owing to a depressed world agricultural situation which resulted in surplus supplies with very low prices. In a period of oversupply and with a depressed agricultural market, nitrogen fertilizer prices are expected to remain low. After 1988/89, however, the surplus balance will diminish, and prices are forecast to rise sharply and peak in the early 1990s. But they will probably decline again toward the mid-1990s after new capacity comes on stream. A detailed examination has been made in this paper of the total costs of producing urea and ammonia and how this is likely to be affected by future energy prices, plant location, and utilization rates. After 1990 it is estimated that at least 10 new nitrogen fertilizer plants will be needed each year through 1995 to meet increasing demand and to replace worn-out plants.

Book Synopsis Industrial Restructuring by : Alan Roe
Download or read book Industrial Restructuring written by Alan Roe and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rationalizing and restructuring of industries is an increasingly important phenomenon in all countries of the OECD and in many developing countries as well. This paper examines that phenomenon from a number of different angles. It defines a taxonomy of restructuring in terms of the level at which restructuring takes place (company, sector or economy-wide) and the motivation behind it (defensive or positive). It attempts to identify the market failures that may justify government intervention with the process. The paper then uses this analytical framework to examine why the pressures on governments to intervene have so manifestly intensified in recent times, and to identify types of industries most likely to be the object of such intervention. Finally, the paper provides a selective and comparative overview of the industrial restructuring experiences of six major OECD countries. The juxtaposition of the theoretical arguments for intervention to correct market failures with the descriptive analysis of OECD country experiences, provides both an analytical framework and certain policy implications of relevance in a developing country context.

Book Synopsis The Efficient Use of Water in Irrigation by : Daniel Hillel
Download or read book The Efficient Use of Water in Irrigation written by Daniel Hillel and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in the nature of a primer, providing a basic review and analysis of the principles governing soil-crop-water-climate relationships, irrigation and the efficient utilization of water in arid and semiarid regions. It presents a critique of traditional and of current irrigation concepts and practices, pointing out the needs and potentialities for improving the efficiency of land and water use in developing countries. Starting from a basic analysis of the environmental, physiological and agronomic factors affecting irrigation, the book contrasts historical and modern approaches to management. It then describes methods of scheduling irrigation and of measuring irrigation water, and compares alternative irrigation systems. It also specifies the requirements and methods of drainage and salinity control. Finally, this book discusses some of the human considerations involved in the vital task of developing sound, appropriate and sustainable irrigation systems.

Book Synopsis The Management of Cultural Property in World Bank-assisted Projects by : Robert Goodland
Download or read book The Management of Cultural Property in World Bank-assisted Projects written by Robert Goodland and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1987 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cultural property" denotes sites or artifacts of archaeological (prehistoric), paleontological, historic, religious and unique natural value; it encompasses remains left by previous human inhabitants as well as unique natural environmental features. Worldwide, cultural property is rapidly, irreversibly and unnecessarily being depleted because of rapid population growth and poorly planned economic development. This loss represents a permanent diminution of the international and national patrimony. During the past decade, many development projects financed by the World Bank have included cultural property concerns. Therefore, the Bank has adopted a general policy to help preserve cultural property and avoid its elimination. Other specific Bank policies apply to particular situations. When potential projects are being identified, pertinent authorities and experts are consulted and/or reconnaissance surveys are made to assess the cultural property elements of the proposed project site. If cultural property is present, relevant government authorities and other experts are called upon to help design mitigatory measures. Nations are best served if economic progress and the preservation of cultural property are carefully planned so as to be mutually enhancing.
