Make calculation neatly at the bottom or side of the page, or on the opposite page. Show your notebook to your instructor each day until he is satisfied with your method of making entries. Each day, before leaving the laboratory; finish the experiments assigned for the days work, write out the answers to as many of the questions as possible, and clean the top of your desk. Before the next laboratory period finish the questions and problems, review your work and be sure that you understand it perfectly. Read over the laboratory notes on the next laboratory exercise. Experiment. Make several measurements of the inside diameter (in centimeters) of your medium-sized beaker. (The instructor will suggest a method.) Record each measurement in your notebook as soon as it is made. The beakers are not perfectly cylindrical, nor is the method very accurate; the measurements, therefore, will usually show variations of a few tenths of a centimeter. An average of at least four measurements will give the mean diameter to about o.i cm. Questions: What fraction of the diameter is this error? What percent of the diameter is this error? Experiment. In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the apparatus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materially aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory.
