Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in General Chemistry This pamphlet claims to present nothing that is new and untried. Beginners in chemistry need such experiments as give certain and well-defined results. The pamphlet has been prepared to use in the laboratory in connection with Storer & Lindsay's "Manual of Chemistry" in the class room, hence the greater number of the experiments have been drawn from that work, yet many from other sources have been included. A large number of manuals have been examined in the preparation of the pamphlet, but the compiler is particularly indebted to those of Williams and Remsen. The raison d'etre for tho book is simply that of facilitating work in the laboratory by having before the student only such matter as is necessary for the work in hand. It has been the endeavor of the compiler to include only such experiments as are truly instructive and well illustrate the subject, and which lead up easily and naturally to a knowledge of the science. The book is to be used in a laboratory in which an instructor is always present with the class to furnish such individual direction as may be necessary. Most of the experiments should be performed on the lecture table before they are attempted by the student. Any text-book may be consulted outside the laboratory; in the laboratory itself no other book than this is allowed. Book excerpt: With many years of teaching experience in the classroom and laboratory, Vickie Williamson and Larry Peck have created EXPERIMENTS IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY: INQUIRY AND SKILL BUILDING with carefully crafted and tested experiments designed to complement any general chemistry curriculum. The authors have selected three types of lab experiments to meet all of the needs of students and instructors looking for a selection of laboratory pedagogy. There are Skill Building experiments to develop techniques and demonstrate previously developed concepts, Guided Inquiry experiments to direct the students to collect data on variables without previously studying the concepts and guide them to look for patterns in the data, and Open Inquiry experiments to allow the students to apply concepts or relationships in a new setting. Twenty-eight experiments feature Pre-Lab questions and Post-Lab questions on perforated pages for easy removal of worksheets, and there is a Common Procedures and Concepts section as an appendix for easy retrieval of basic information for students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year College Chemistry a Manual of Laboratory Exercises The work outlined in this manual is intended to accompany the author's text, "Second Year College Chemistry." It may, according to the authors experience, be used in connection with a course in quantitative analysis. The general order of procedure in both classroom and laboratory has been outlined in the preface to the text. All the experiments here presented have been carefully tested out with several classes of students and then carefully rewritten. The author feels, therefore, that careful following of directions will insure good results. In all work of a quantitative nature, however, neatness and natural aptitude are prime factors which cannot be forced upon the student. The student who is naturally sloppy and clumsy will probably emerge from any course with his original traits, and will never measure up as a real chemist. However, neatness and skill on the part of the teacher are also necessary, for even a good student may be ruined by lax supervision and a careless example. The apparatus employed in the experiments is made as simple as possible. This has been done for two reasons: first, the author desires to make it possible to work through this entire manual in places where the cost of more elaborate apparatus would be prohibitive; and second, he desires to emphasize principles rather than the bewildering details of refined methods and instruments. On the other hand, the aim has been constantly kept in mind to make the work accurate and truly quantitative. Careful directions have been included for the preparation of all the apparatus, although this preparatory work need not always, be done by the student where the time is limited. One of the most important parts of successful laboratory work is the careful keeping of a notebook. The teacher is, therefore, urged to insist that neat, accurate notes accompany each experiment. These notes should be taken in the permanent notebook and in their final form, as soon as the data are obtained. The habit of writing notes on scraps of paper and afterwards copying them off in "better form" is pernicious. Proper entry of notes should be regarded as part of every experiment, not a separate exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry The experiments outlined in this manual are designed primarily for college students who have not had a course in chemistry in a preparatory school. The exercises represent the laboratory work of a comparatively brief introductory course in General Chemistry. The experiments are to be conducted under the guidance of an instructor, and are to be supplemented by class-room demonstrations in connection with recitations from a text-book in General Chemistry for college students, or by illustrated lectures and text-book assignments. Frequently the experiments do not furnish sufficient information to enable the student to answer some of the questions and make the explanations that are to appear in his notebook. The necessary information can generally be obtained from the text-book, and it is my plan to have the student use the text-book and laboratory outline as companion volumes in the laboratory. To facilitate the students progress in this connection page references to two widely used texts have been inserted. My experience goes to show that the student will thus make very efficient use of his time, that he will give care and thought to his work, and that the laboratory work can be successfully made the central feature of instruction in the course. In preparing the experiments, the substances chosen for study have purposely been limited to avoid scattering the students efforts. Intensive, rather than extensive, study has been the underlying idea in sleeting the exercises. Extended experiments on the metallic elements have not been included, as I feel that this work should be undertaken in Analytical Chemistry, and be allotted some of the time so largely used for laboratory practice in following a scheme of separations. I fully realize the value of practice in the identification of unknown substances, and this feature of laboratory work has been duly emphasized, and, it is hoped, in a manner which preserves its educational value. Emphasis has also been placed upon the general reactions of acids, bases, and salts, the processes of oxidation and reduction, and chemical changes prominent in everyday life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry: With Exercises in the Preparation This laboratory manual has been written to meet the requirements of students of chemistry who already possess an elementary knowledge of the subject, such, for instance, as is acquired at our better high schools. How best to continue the chemical education of such students is one of the most difficult problems which confront teachers of chemistry in our colleges and universities. A time honored practice has been to ignore secondary school preparation entirely and give identical instruction to these men and to real beginners indiscriminately. This was doubtless justifiable some years ago when chemical instruction was new in our secondary schools and was, naturally, poor; but today it can only be defended on the ground of necessity. The larger institutions recognize this where the number of elementary students is adequate, and either have arranged separate laboratory sections for the differently prepared students, or, better still, give them wholly separate instruction. But even when segregation of this kind has been secured, the problem is by no means solved. Those students who have studied chemistry in the secondary school have already done a large share of the simple, important, and impressive experiments. The first freshness of their, interest in, and wonder at, chemical phenomena has been lost. On the other hand, to trust that the average college student retains any clear conceptions regarding the abstract matter of his secondary school chemistry, which is so important as a basis for further study, is to court disappointment. Besides, as every experienced college teacher knows, the very familiarity of such students with parts of the subject frequently leads to over-confidence about the whole of it - with disastrous results. Flagging interest then, hazy ideas about the principles of chemistry, and over-confidence are the special difficulties of the problem. The requirements then to be met by a laboratory manual of this kind are by no means easy. The most essential are, first, that those important facts and principles which the student has already studied shall be reviewed in a way sufficiently novel not to bore him, nor to encourage him to over-confidence; second, that the student's chemical horizon shall be widened by the study of new and unfamiliar substances; and third, that further important generalizations upon which the superstructure of the science is based, shall be disclosed and made clear. To meet these requirements I have resorted to several expedients. For instance, to review the weight relationships of chemical reactions, I have devised a series of simple, quantitative experiments quite different from the ones usually performed in a strictly elementary course.
