Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Applied Chemistry Although technical analysis has long been included in the curricula of technical colleges, a textbook devoted solely to this subject is still lacking. Laboratory manuals and the like generally contain little more than mere descriptions of technical methods of analysis, and explanations of the underlying chemical principles or of their applications are seldom attempted. It is evident that such books can be of very little help to students. The mechanism of the reactions involved in analytical methods is by no means so clear that explanation is unnecessary, since a student usually begins technical analysis at a comparatively early stage in his course. Neither can it be assumed that the student has sufficient knowledge of the practical side of the subject to enable him to grasp the full significance of the analysis in which he is engaged. Only when the analyst understands what part the raw material under examination is destined to play in subsequent industrial operations, how a manufactured product has reached its final condition and for what purpose it is to be used, is he in a position to appreciate the importance of the various determinations, or the consequences that might ensue from a faulty analysis. The author, as lecturer in the Darmstadt Technical School, knows from his long experience that it is just the emphasis laid upon the technical application of an analysis which deepens the student's knowledge and understanding of chemical processes. Interest is stimulated in the analysis itself, which is thus saved from being regarded merely as an unnecessary extension of ordinary quantitative analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This full-color, comprehensive, affordable manual is intended for a one-semester general, organic, and biochemistry course, preparatory/basic chemistry course, liberal arts chemistry course, or allied health chemistry course. The procedures are written with the goal of simplifying a complicated and often challenging subject for students by applying concepts to everyday life. The first half of the lab manual covers general topics such as chemical and physical properties, elements of the periodic table, types of bonds, empirical formulas, and reaction stoichiometry. These labs form the foundation for future labs, which cover the basics of organic and biological chemistry. Experiments include the classification of organic compounds and the determination of biomolecules. By the end of this course, students should have a solid understanding of the basic concepts of chemistry, which will give them confidence as they embark on various allied health careers.Features: ?Initiate the study of basic concepts in the general, organic, and biochemistry laboratory by reading through concise introductory material and answering pre-lab questions that familiarize students with the concepts presented in each exercise. The inclusion of color photography and high-quality art promotes engagement and comprehension of the more difficult concepts.?Investigate the mysteries of matter by following the clearly written procedures and recording data and observations on the provided data sheets. Common techniques are reviewed as needed in Technique Tips boxes to reinforce the development of basic laboratory skills. OSHA pictograms, and Lab Safety boxes are provided to help students understand any risks associated with specific chemicals and equipment.?Integrate knowledge of each laboratory topic by making sense of the data that has been collected. Reflective Exercises galvanize critical thinking and scientific analysis skills to take shape as students make connections between what has been learned and practiced in the hands-on lab and how this knowledge can be applied to a relevant, real-world context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Physical Chemistry The laboratory exercises described in this text book are designed to meet the requirements of students who wish to follow a laboratory course dealing with some of the applications of physical chemistry. The experimental work here described is based on the exercises introduced by Dr. R. S. Hutton, in 1900, as a supplement to the course in practical physics which form part of the curriculum of the students in the Honours School of Chemistry in the University of Manchester, in their first and second years' studies. It has been endeavoured, in this collection of exercises dealing with certain branches of chemical physics, to present to chemical students a publication which will for their purpose supplement the text books of Schuster and Lees, on "An Intermediate Course in Practical Physics" (Macmillan & Co.), and "Advanced Exercises in Practical Physics" (Cambridge University Press), and it is expected that students following this work will have already taken one or both of the above courses in pure physics. The field in the borderland between physics and chemistry has grown to dimensions which are now very large and is still rapidly increasing.
