This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Welfare Politics in Mexico by : Peter Ward
Download or read book Welfare Politics in Mexico written by Peter Ward and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was originally published in 1986, this was the first book to deal simultaneously with several aspects of social welfare provision in a developing country. The unique contribution of the book is based on the analysis of 3 substantive welfare areas – land (for self-help housing), urban infrastructure and health – which are examined in terms of the nature, motivation and effectiveness of government intervention. The book covers 3 administrations between 1970 and the mid-1980s and sets the analysis in the wider context of Latin American affairs. The author shows that although social welfare expenditure has increased, its importance as a government priority has been sharply eroded.

Book Synopsis The New Politics of Inequality in Latin America by : Douglas A. Chalmers
Download or read book The New Politics of Inequality in Latin America written by Douglas A. Chalmers and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997-01-30 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a broader backdrop of globalization and worldwide moves toward political democracy, The New Politics of Inequality in Latin America examines the unfolding relationships among social change, equity, and the democratic representation of the poor in Latin America.Recent Latin American governments have turned away from redistributive policies; at the same time, popular political and social organizations have been generally weakened, inequality has increased, and the gap between rich and poor has grown. Hanging in the balance is the consolidation and the quality of new or would-be democracies; this volume suggests that governments must find not just short-term programmes to alleviate poverty, but long-term means to ensure the effective integration of thepoor into political life. The New Politics of Inequality in Latin America bridges the intellectual chasm between, on the one hand, studies of grassroots politics, and on the other, explorations of elite politics and formal institution-building. It will be of interest to students and scholars of contemporary Latin American politics and society and, more generally, in the vicissitudes of democracy and citizenship in the late twentieth-century global system.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Megacity by : Nadine Reis
Download or read book Beyond the Megacity written by Nadine Reis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Megacity connects and reconnects the global debate on the contemporary urban condition to the Latin American tradition of seeing, considering, and theorizing urbanization from the margins. It develops the approach of "peripheral urbanization" as a way to integrate the theoretical agendas belonging to global suburbanisms, neo-Marxist accounts of planetary urbanization, and postcolonial urban studies, and to move urban theory closer to the complexity and diversity of urbanization in the Global South. From an interdisciplinary perspective, Beyond the Megacity investigates the natures, causes, implications, and politics of current urbanization processes in Latin America. The book draws on case studies from various countries across the region, covering theoretical and disciplinary approaches from the fields of geography, anthropology, sociology, urban studies, agrarian studies, and urban and regional planning, and is written by academics, journalists, practitioners, and scholar-activists. Beyond the Megacity unites these unique perspectives by shifting attention to the places, processes, practices, and bodies of knowledge that have often been neglected in the past.

Download or read book Mexico City written by Peter M. Ward and published by Academy Press. This book was released on 1998-02-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico City "...the most documented analysis of contemporary urban Mexico. Peter Ward has done it again!" Susan Eckstein, President of the Latin American Studies Association Mexico City is one of the largest and most dynamic 'megacities' of the world. The last four decades of dramatic growth have seen great economic, demographic, political and social change. Does such profound change threaten the fabric of urban life in Mexico? Peter Ward argues that Mexico City is not falling apart, not in danger of imminent implosion. Rather, its citizens and local authorities are responding positively to the major problems that confront them: economic and commercial restructuring; privatisation and deregulation; excessive centralisation; low-paid job opportunities; poor housing and infrastructure; inadequate distribution of health care facilities; poor and corrupt policing; ecological fragility threatened by pollution and earthquakes. More democratic city management systems and structures are emerging, whilst grassroots movements are making their voices heard and affecting change. This second edition of Mexico City remains the best informed guide to this most fascinating of the world's cities.
