Book Synopsis Religion and the Challenges of Science by : Mr Richard Feist
Download or read book Religion and the Challenges of Science written by Mr Richard Feist and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does science pose a challenge to religion and religious belief? This question has been a matter of long-standing debate - and it continues to concern not only scholars in philosophy, theology, and the sciences, but also those involved in public educational policy. This volume provides background to the current 'science and religion' debate, yet focuses as well on themes where recent discussion of the relation between science and religion has been particularly concentrated. The first theme deals with the history of the interrelation of science and religion. The second and third themes deal with the implications of recent work in cosmology, biology and so-called intelligent design for religion and religious belief. The fourth theme is concerned with 'conceptual issues' underlying, or implied, in the current debates, such as: Are scientific naturalism and religion compatible? Are science and religion bodies of knowledge or practices or both? Do religion and science offer conflicting truth claims? By illuminating contemporary discussion in the science-religion debate and by outlining the options available in describing the relation between the two, this volume will be of interest to scholars and to members of the educated public alike.

Book Synopsis The Sacred in the City by : Liliana Gómez
Download or read book The Sacred in the City written by Liliana Gómez and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the way in which the city interacts with the sacred in all its many guises, with religion and the human search for meaning in life. As the process of urbanization of society is accelerating thus giving an increasing importance to cities and the 'metropolis', it is relevant to investigate the social or cultural cohesion that these urban agglomerations manifest. Religion is keenly observed as witnessing a growth, crucially impacting cultural and political dynamics, as well as determining the emergence of new sacred symbols and their inscription in urban spaces worldwide. The sacred has become an important category of a new interpretation of social and cultural transformation processes. From a unique broader perspective, the volume focuses on the relationship between the city and the sacred. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, combining the expertise of philosophers, historians, architects, social geographers, sociologists and anthropologists, it draws a nuanced picture of the different layers of religion, of the sacred and its diverse forms within the city, with examples from Europe, South America and the Caribbean, and Africa.

Book Synopsis Durkheim in Dialogue by : Sondra L. Hausner
Download or read book Durkheim in Dialogue written by Sondra L. Hausner and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the publication of the great sociological treatise, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life, this new volume shows how aptly Durkheim1s theories still resonate with the study of contemporary and historical religious societies. The volume applies the Durkheimian model to multiple cases, probing its resilience, wondering where it might be tweaked, and asking which aspects have best stood the test of time. A dialogue between theory and ethnography, this book shows how Durkheimian sociology has become a mainstay of social thought and theory, pointing to multiple ways in which Durkheim1s work on religion remains relevant to our thinking about culture.
Book Synopsis L'imaginaire politique by : LAMIZET Bernard
Download or read book L'imaginaire politique written by LAMIZET Bernard and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Interrelatedness in Chinese Religious Traditions by : Diana Arghirescu
Download or read book Interrelatedness in Chinese Religious Traditions written by Diana Arghirescu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of religions is essential for understanding other cultures, building a sense of belonging in a multicultural world and fostering a global intercultural dialogue. Exploring Chinese religions as one interlocutor in this dialogue, Diana Arghirescu engages with Song-dynasty Confucian and Buddhist theoretical developments through a detailed study of the original texts of the Chan scholar-monk Qisong (1007-1072) and the Neo-Confucian master Zhu Xi (1130-1200). Starting with these figures, she builds an interpretive theory focusing on “ethical interrelatedness” and proposes it as a theoretical tool for the study of the Chinese religious traditions. By actively engaging with other contemporary theories of religion and refusing to approach Chinese religions with Western frameworks, Arghirescu's comparative perspective makes it possible to uncover differences between the various Western and Chinese cultural presuppositions upon which these theories are built. As such, this book breaks new ground in the methodology of religious studies, comparative philosophy and furthers our understanding of the Confucian-Buddhist interaction.
