Book Synopsis After the Classics by : Vicent Andrés Estellés
Download or read book After the Classics written by Vicent Andrés Estellés and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of the verse of Valencian poet Vicent Andres Estelles (1924-1993) is accompanied by a translation into English from the original Catalan. The format of an innovative dialogue with classical authors — a cornerstone of Estellesian expression — constitutes an ingenious invocation and parodic commentary on the output and ethos of the Latin poets Horace, Ovid, Virgil and Catullus, the medieval patriarch of Valencian letters Ausiàs March and the Renaissance Castilian poet, Garcilaso de la Vega. For Estellés, Octavian Rome provides a parallel to the Franco dictatorship and the historical framework surrounding these writers affords the neophyte an opportunity for ideological denunciation, creative wit and lyrical grace as well as righteous anger at the oppressive pettiness of life under autocracy. The translators have attempted to bring to an Anglophone readership the wealth of achievement of this writer who, despite the severity of fascist repression, sang and celebrated the experience of his own community through its own oppressed language.

Book Synopsis ALIMENTO ESPIRITUAL PARA UN ALMA QUE BUSCA by : PADRE JOSEPH BELLERIVE, JCD.
Download or read book ALIMENTO ESPIRITUAL PARA UN ALMA QUE BUSCA written by PADRE JOSEPH BELLERIVE, JCD. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Déodat de Séverac by : Robert Francis Waters
Download or read book Déodat de Séverac written by Robert Francis Waters and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his piano music, Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921) also composed orchestral and vocal works, including opera, cantata and incidental music. His early works were influenced by Impressionist harmonies, church modes, cyclic techniques, folk-like melodies and Andalusian motives, though his style changed dramatically in 1907 when he began to include Catalan elements in his compositions. In this book, Robert Waters provides a much-needed study of the life and works of Séverac, focusing on the composer's regionalist philosophy. Séverac's engagement with folk music was not a patriotic gesture in the vein of nationalistic composers, but a way of expressing regional identity within France to counter the restrictive styles sanctioned by the Paris Conservatory. The book will appeal to those specializing in French music, European ethnic musics, piano music and French music history.
Book Synopsis From the Monastery to the World by : Thomas Merton
Download or read book From the Monastery to the World written by Thomas Merton and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Merton and Ernesto Cardenal were both poets and priests, wholly committed to a life of spiritual contemplation which was never far from the gritty work that lead them to risk life and reputation in order to raise worldwide consciousness concerning issues of social justice and the abuse of human rights. From the Monastery to the World collects the complete correspondence between these spiritual men and dedicated activists, translated into English for the first time. The letters in this book, written between Merton and Cardenal from 1959–1968, give us fascinating insights into the early spiritual and political awakenings of eventual Sandinista and exponent of liberation theology Ernesto Cardenal, who was then a novice leaving the Trappist Monastery in Kentucky where he first met Merton. While making the long trip home to Nicaragua to build a utopian artist's commune on the Island of Solentiname, Cardenal rubs elbows with some of Latin America's greatest writers and artists of that time. In From the Monastery to the World, Cardenal is still a hungry pupil, years away from becoming the internationally renowned poet–statesman and Nicaraguan Minister of Culture. Here we see the poet and monk Thomas Merton as a wise, patient, and sometimes even humbled mentor, during the years when he was still shaping and collecting the raw materials for such writings as: "The Way of Chuang Tzu", "Raids on the Unspeakable", and "Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander". Merton and Cardenal's correspondence grants readers an audience to conversations between two men deeply connected by their vigorous endeavors toward spiritual freedom, voracious intellectual appetites, and artistic exploration despite the cultural differences, language barriers, and geographic distances which divide them.

Book Synopsis The Story of Leander and Hero, by Joan Roís de Corella by : Joan Rois de Corella
Download or read book The Story of Leander and Hero, by Joan Roís de Corella written by Joan Rois de Corella and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joan Roís de Corella is one of the most renowned authors of fifteenth-century Catalan literature. His Story of Leander and Hero uses a well-known Vergilian and Ovidian motif of unremitting love that turns into tragedy. Corella retells the story adding to it a great dose of suspense and pathos and recasts it in the fashion of sentimental prose, a genre famous at the time and a clear precedent of the great narrative genre to flourish during the Renaissance in the Iberian Peninsula and Europe: the novel.
