Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many saints have borne the stigmata - wounds resembling those of Christ's crucifixion. While some of those saints have written about their experience, little is known of the personal experience of the first of all saints to brandish this extraordinary sign, Francis of Assisi. They were and have remained his carefully guarded secret. In The Five Wounds of Saint Francis, author Fr. Solanus Benfatti, CFR, explores the significance of this miraculous event in the Saint's life through careful analysis of pertinent medieval literature and recent scholarly studies. He establishes the historicity of the event, which has been called into question, and draws surprising and inspiring conclusions, leaving the reader with a afresh understanding of Saint Francis's spiritual experience.

Book excerpt: "Charity" as a Christian and, in particular, also monastic virtue was a complex phenomenon in the Middle Ages. The present volume outlines, albeit with broad strokes, the field of charity in the monastic form of life. The collected essays endeavour to approach the subject from different angles, which present themselves as especially significant. The focus is placed both upon older communities oriented towards separation from the world as well as upon those open to the world and interested in interaction with all people, so that insights can be gained into mutual fraternal charity within the convents as well as into charity towards all. Additionally, the volume attempts to touch upon the wide spectrum of the communication levels of charity. Not least, attention is given to the pivotal point of charity - the systemic embedding of charity between people in the love of man for God, which leads to assimilation with Him. In doing so, the purpose was to draw attention to the fertility of the subject and to outline its importance for the history of the vita religiosa.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays written in honor of David Burr, emeritus professor at the Polytechnic University of Virginia (Blacksburg): a scholar who has spent a career researching and publishing on the multi-faceted phenomenon of the Spiritual Franciscans (late 13th-early 14th century) and, in particular, on the life and writings of Peter of John Olivi in southern France. Representing some of the finest scholars in the field these eighteen scholarly essays touch on aspects of both phenomena. Three essays are devoted to the historiography of David Burr; three are dedicated to medieval Apocalypticism; another seven deal specifically with Peter of John Olivi; and five final essays explore aspects of the Spiritual Franciscans, their precursors and adherents. Contributors are C. Colt Anderson, Marco Bartoli, Michael F. Cusato, Gilbert Dahan, Alberto Forni, Fortunato Iozzelli, Philip D. Krey, Robert E. Lerner, Warren Lewis, Michele Lodone, Kevin Madigan, Antonio Montefusco, Delfi I. Nieto-Isabel, Dabney G. Park, Sylvain Piron, Gian Luca Potestà, Marco Rainini, and Paolo Vian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world facing many crises, pandemics, climate and environmental challenges, human rights abuses, and threats of totalitarian regimes. Romano Guardini (1885-1968), a major influencer of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, worked through one of the most difficult periods of German history--the first half of the twentieth century. What does he have to say to these challenges, and how is his notion of providence relevant today? Jane Lee-Barker shows how Guardini's insight and deep thought on God's providence weave their way through his work, enabling the reader to fully appreciate "God's world." In relationship with God, the human person is invited to participate in responsible care for the world while responding to their own vocational call from the God who sustains him or her.

Book excerpt: In this volume you will find stories about hyperactive relics, ghosts in spiritual or bodily form, as well as accounts of the dead being conjured, resurrected, and brought back to life from decomposing matter. This is not so much for the purpose of assembling a kind of Neapolitan Wunderkammer, but rather to allow these bodies – in physical or spiritual form, or sometimes both at the same time – to speak as protagonists, and to offer their own contribution to the historical anthropology of the Kingdom of Naples. This volume explores the boundaries between body and spirit, life and death, as well as the natural, preternatural, and supernatural in the long early modern era in southern Italy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteenth century was a critical period both for Spain’s formation and for the imperial dominance of her Crown. Spanish monarchs ruled far and wide, spreading agents and culture across Europe and the wider world. Yet in Italy they encountered another culture whose achievements were even prouder and whose aspirations often even grander than their own. Italians, the nominally subaltern group, did not readily accept Spanish dominance and exercised considerable agency over how imperial Spanish identity developed within their borders. In the end Italians’ views sometimes even shaped how their Spanish colonizers eventually came to see themselves. The essays collected here evaluate the broad range of contexts in which Spaniards were present in early modern Italy. They consider diplomacy, sanctity, art, politics and even popular verse. Each essay excavates how Italians who came into contact with the Spanish crown’s power perceived and interacted with the wider range of identities brought amongst them by its servants and subjects. Together they demonstrate what influenced and what determined Italians’ responses to Spain; they show Spanish Italy in its full transcultural glory and how its inhabitants projected its culture - throughout the sixteenth century and beyond.
