Download or read book La sécurité alimentaire au Tchad written by Ali Moustapha Dalal and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Socio-Economic Evaluation of Cropping Systems for Smallholder Farmers – Challenges and Options by : Subhasis Mandal
Download or read book Socio-Economic Evaluation of Cropping Systems for Smallholder Farmers – Challenges and Options written by Subhasis Mandal and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAO estimated that five out of six farms in the world are operating less than two hectares of land, suggesting that small-holder farmers are producing over one-third of the global food. The cropping systems practiced by smallholder farmers play a vital role in agri-food production systems and help to reduce hunger, improve nutrition, and provide livelihoods to millions across the developing countries. The performance of these cropping systems has a direct impact on achieving the multiple Sustainable Development Goals (2030) of No Poverty (SDG 1), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), and Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3). System intensification is now widely recognized as an essential pathway to achieve food and nutrition security in developing countries. The numbers of smallholder farmers are rapidly increasing in both developing and underdeveloped countries, however, they are increasingly facing challenges to run profitably. Cropping system intensification (CSI) could be one of the ways to make such production systems more remunerative for these farmers.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of the FAO response to the crisis in the Lake Chad Basin 2015‒2018 by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Evaluation of the FAO response to the crisis in the Lake Chad Basin 2015‒2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-nine million people live in the Lake Chad region, exploiting its rich natural resources and relatively constant supply of water, fodder and fertile land all year round. The area used to be a food production hub, with local markets supplying produce to Cameroon, Chad, the Niger and Nigeria. However, poor natural resource management, poor coordination across the different countries of the region, and the widespread impact of climate change have contributed to the significant deterioration of the Lake’s natural ecosystem capacity. Agricultural soils and pastures have been widely degraded, leading to a huge reduction in food productivity and, thus, job opportunities, especially for the youth living in rural areas who account for a high percentage of the population. Conflicts and tensions have created a conducive context for young people in search of income and opportunities to join the Boko Haram terrorist movement originated in Nigeria. This evaluation was conducted to address FAO’s response to the Lake Chad Basin crisis, including interventions conducted in 2015‒2018, as FAO published the Lake Chad Basin Crisis Response Strategy (2017–2019) to address the needs of the identified 6.9 million people affected by soaring food insecurity in the Lake Chad Basin in early 2017. The objectives of this evaluation were to analyse FAO’s responses to the crisis at operating level, with a focus on efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability, while assessing the relevance and consistency of the regional approach from a strategic perspective. The evaluation team visited many of the areas concerned, and at the end of each visit they organized a debriefing session with the respective FAO country team to share information gathered and collect complementary data and analysis to inform its deliberations. This helped to ensure transparency in the data collection process and to maximize the learning process. For FAO to support the food security and nutrition of communities in the Lake Chad region effectively, a regional strategy focused on supporting the resilience of communities is relevant and appropriate. Complementary to FAO’s country-based programmes, a regional strategy bears the potential to devise interventions that adapt to the cross-border nature of issues that each country faces and would allow supporting a more cohesive and collaborative way of working. Based on the Regional Response Strategy (2017–2019), FAO should revise its strategy and approach by incorporating governmental objectives, and translate it into an operational action plan, in line with other partners’ strategies in the region.

Book Synopsis Diagnostic on the effectiveness of national fishery and aquaculture policies and strategies for food and nutrition security in West Africa by : Economic Community of West African States
Download or read book Diagnostic on the effectiveness of national fishery and aquaculture policies and strategies for food and nutrition security in West Africa written by Economic Community of West African States and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis made of the effectiveness of national fishery and aquaculture policies and strategies in ECOWAS Member States and Mauritania has shown overall that their implementation faces with problems related to the low level of domestic funding allocated. This is compounded by their heavy dependence on external financing through TFP programmes and projects in which the objectives are not always aligned with those of national policies. Thus, the attractiveness of the sector will have to be improved by establishing a much more favourable environment for private sector investment in fisheries and aquaculture, given the substantial investment gaps highlighted by the financial analysis of the various national fishery and aquaculture investment plans. The sector’s share in the State budget is also expected to increase, as it does not reflect the importance accorded to the sector in national development policy and strategic planning documents. This meagre budgetary appropriation is one of the main factors making policies in West Africa less effective. Moreover, despite the efforts of Member States, the fisheries and aquaculture sector still faces challenges such as weak participatory governance, low human and technical capacity, persistent IUU fishing, low levels of aquaculture production, high post-harvest losses, etc., which detract from the sector’s contribution to the FNS among the different populations, especially in marine and river coastal communities.
