Book excerpt: As a low carbon energy source, nuclear energy plays a reinforced role in a sustainable electricity mix. However, strengthening the share of nuclear energy implies the guarantee of safe, long-term operation of current systems and potentially the fostering of new constructions. Service life extension – as well as the design of future nuclear power plants – relies on the availability of robust and qualified structural materials, and their manufacturing processes. The science and engineering of materials are key in selecting robust material solutions and predicting aging mechanisms. Materials and Processes for Nuclear Energy Today and in the Future reviews different reactor concepts and fuel management systems. Nuclear equipment has to maintain integrity under extreme conditions, such as high temperature, radiation, loads and/or corrosive environments. This book analyzes the requirements on components, and introduces reference solutions regarding materials and processes. It describes the materials’ main properties, their limits and the current R&D trends. Lastly, innovations are discussed, such as materials with enhanced properties, advanced manufacturing or using AI.

Book excerpt: Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis, Second Edition Volume 4: Fatigue Damage Fatigue damage in a system with one degree of freedom is one of the two criteria applied when comparing the severity of vibratory environments. The same criterion is also employed for a specification representing the effects produced by the set of vibrations imposed in a real-world environment. In this volume, which is devoted to the calculation of fatigue damage, the author explores the various hypotheses and models used to describe the behavior of material suffering fatigue and the laws of fatigue accumulation. He also considers the methods of counting response peaks, which are used to establish a histogram when it is impossible to use the probability density of the peaks obtained with a Gaussian signal. The expressions for mean damage and its standard deviation are established and other hypotheses are tested. The Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis five-volume series has been written with both the professional engineer and the academic in mind. Christian Lalanne explores every aspect of vibration and shock, two fundamental and extremely significant areas of mechanical engineering, from both a theoretical and practical point of view. The five volumes cover all the necessary issues in this area of mechanical engineering. The theoretical analyses are placed in the context of both the real world and the laboratory, which is essential for the development of specifications.

Corrosion causes waste of the natural material and energy resources, it creates serious materials problems for many technologies and adversely affects almost every area of engineering. The use of metals in various aggressive environments has resulted in an extremely wide diversity of corrosion problems. This book presents a collection of concise reviews written by experts in the field on selected topics of metallic corrosion and on some aspects of interaction of hydrogen with metals. A comprehensive range of problems is examined including localized corrosion, high temperature corrosion in liquid metals and molten salts, transport control in corrosion processes, entry of hydrogen into metals, hydrogen embrittlement, and hydrogen reactions with metals. The variety of topics covered in the book will provide corrosion scientists, engineers, university lecturers and students alike with an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems of materials degradation and surface processes in metal corrosion.

Book excerpt: The objective of this work on the mechanics of aeronautical solids, materials and structures is to give an overview of the principles necessary for sizing of structures in the aeronautical field. It begins by introducing the classical notions of mechanics: stress, strain, behavior law, and sizing criteria, with an emphasis on the criteria specific to aeronautics, such as limit loads and ultimate loads. Methods of resolution are then presented, and in particular the finite element method. Plasticity is also covered in order to highlight its influence on the sizing of structures, and in particular its benefits for design criteria. Finally, the physics of the two main materials of aeronautical structures, namely aluminum and composite materials, is approached in order to clarify the sizing criteria stated in the previous chapters. Exercises, with detailed corrections, then make it possible for the reader to test their understanding of the different subjects.

Book excerpt: About the Series: This important new series of five volumes has been written with both the professional engineers and the academic in mind. Christian Lalanne explores every aspect of vibration and shock, two fundamental and crucially important areas of mechanical engineering, from both the theoretical and practical standpoints. As all products need to be designed to withstand the environmental conditions to which they are likely to be subjected, prototypes must be verified by calculation and laboratory tests, the latter according to specifications from national or international standards. The concept of tailoring the product to its environment has gradually developed whereby, from the very start of a design project, through the to the standards specifications and testing procedures on th e prototype, the real environment in which the product being tested will be functioning is taken into account. The five volumes of Mechanical Shock and Vibration cover all the issues that need to be addressed in this area of mechanical engineering. The theoretical analyses are placed in the context of the real world and of laboratory tests - essential for the development of specifications. Volume IV: Fatigue Damage Fatigue damage in a system with one degree of freedom is one of the two criteria applied when comparing the severity of vibratory environments. The same criterion is also employed for a specifciation representing the effects produced by the set of vibrations imposed in a real environment. In this volume, which is devoted to the calculation of fatigue damage, the author explores the hypotheses adopted to describe the behavior of material suffering fatigue and the laws of fatigue accumulation. He also considers the methods of counting the response peaks, which are used to establish the histogram when it is impossible to use the probability density of the peaks obtained with a Gaussian signal. The expressions for mean damage and its standard deviation are established and other hypotheses are tested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
