Book excerpt: A guide to this fossil-rich area of Spain: “Likely to become a landmark reference in dinosaur ichnology.” —James O. Farlow During the Early Cretaceous, lakes, meandering streams, and flood plains covered the region where the current foothills of Rioja now exist. Today the area is known for its wine and for the dozens of sites where footprints and trackways of dinosaurs, amphibians, and even pterosaurs can be seen. The dinosaurs that lived here 120 million years ago left their footsteps imprinted in the mud and moist soil. Now fossilized in rock, they have turned Rioja into one of the most valuable dinosaur footprint sites in all of Europe. Félix Pérez-Lorente and his colleagues have published extensively on the region, mostly in Spanish-language journals. In this volume, Pérez-Lorente provides an up-to-date synthesis of that research in English. He offers detailed descriptions of the sites, footprints, and trackways—and explains what these prints and tracks can tell us about the animals who made them.

Winemaking here dates to Roman and medieval times, and today modern wineries designed by Gehry, Calatrava, and other celebrity architects flourish alongside traditional villages. Lavishly illustrated with photographs of the people and landscape and with detailed maps, this guide ranges over a diverse area from Rioja to Navarra, Bierzo, Galicia, and the Basque country as it explores winemaking from the ancient to the traditional and modern. Written by a trio of experts on Spanish wine, it provides insider information on a region home to Spain's finest Tempranillo, its prestigious Albariño, and many other indigenous grape varieties such as Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Viura. The authors look in depth at topics including climate and soil, grape varieties, and viticulture, and profile more than 85 individual wineries. They also include information not available elsewhere: several top ten lists plus "secret addresses" for the best restaurants and shops in which to find aged and historic vintages of Rioja.

Book excerpt: Centris (Paracentris) Cameron is one of the most specious and morphologically diverse subgenera of the bee genus Centris Fabricius. These two features, along with the lack of modern taxonomic revisions make this group one of the lineages with the greatest taxonomic problems within Centridini. Partial revisions of groups of species from North and South America have been published, but none comprehensively studying all species described. In this book are studied all species of Centris (Paracentris) for the first time, providing diagnoses and redescriptions of both sexes. The following twenty one species are described as new: C. aenigmatica sp. nov., C. agyniax sp. nov., C. areequipensis sp. nov., C. aymara sp. nov., C. bagualis sp. nov., C. caribensis sp. nov., C. comonoxa sp. nov., C. diaguita sp. nov., C. euctenoda sp. nov., C. hexirrhina sp. nov., C. inca sp. nov., C. mexicanaides sp. nov., C. milluni sp. nov., C. multistriata sp. nov., C. niveiceps sp. nov., C. rasmusseni sp. nov., C. rozeni sp. nov., C. sacsayhuaman sp. nov., C. tayabamba sp. nov., C. xenopoda sp. nov., and C. yawar sp. nov., mainly from the South American Andes, including the first species recorded from the Caribbean. Centris satana Snelling is proposed as new junior synonym of C. laevibullata Snelling. In addition, the male of C. cisnerosi (Cockerell) and the female of C. euphenax Cockrell are described for the first time. An identification key, figures, maps, new distribution records, floral hosts, and an updated catalog for all species of the subgenus are also provided.
