Yet the field's understandable focus on extant portraits has made it difficult to generalize accurately. Most notably, bronze was usually the material of choice, but its high scrap value meant that such statues were inevitably melted down, so that almost all surviving statues are of stone. By examining the much larger and more representative body of statue bases, Jakob Munk Hojte is here able to situate the statues themselves in context. This volume includes a catalogue of 2300 known statue bases from more than 800 sites within and without the Roman Empire. Moreover, since it covers a period of 250 years, it allows for the first time consistent geographic, chronological and commemorative patterns to emerge. Hojte finds among other things that imperial portrait statues are connected chiefly with urban centres; that they were raised continuously during a given reign, with a higher concentration a couple years after accession; that a primary purpose was often to advertise a donor's merits; and that they increased sixfold in frequency from Augustus to Hadrian, an increase attributable to community erections. Indeed, the main point of criticism on his father, Marcus Aurelius, is that he appointed his son as his successor. Especially Commodus’ behaviour as a gladiator, and the way he represented himself with divine attributes (especially those of Hercules), are often used as evidence for the emperor’s presumed madness. In his newest book, Ramsay MacMullen investigates why the adoption of Roman ways was so prevalent during this period.Drawing largely on archaeological sources, MacMullen discovers that during this period more than half a million Roman veterans were resettled in colonies overseas, and an additional hundred or more urban centers in the provinces took on normal Italian-Roman town constitutions. Great sums of expendable wealth came into the hands of ambitious Roman and local notables, some of which was spent in establishing and advertising Roman ways. MacMullen argues that acculturation of the ancient world was due not to cultural imperialism on the part of the conquerors but to eagerness of imitation among the conquered, and that the Romans were able to respond with surprisingly effective techniques of mass production and standardization.

Book excerpt: Modern scholarship dealing with the economy of the ancient world has developed rapidly in recent decades. Studies of ancient economic structures and history have in many respects achieve standards as a discipline comparable to those of economic history, using models and scenarios exactly as it is frequently seen in studies of later periods with better sources. The best example is perhaps the historical demography of Roman Italy. It was a marginal field of research until the early 1990s, but is now one of the key subjects in the study of Roman economy with a lively debate between the followers of a low count reconstruction of the demographic development in Roman Italy versus the scholars who favour a high count. Furthermore, quantitative studies have become serious scholarship and are no longer despised as only number games' as is apparent, for instance, from the new Oxford Roman Economy Project.' This is due to the great amount of published archaeological material such as terra sigillata, amphorae and shipwrecks. It is also illustrated by the shift from the predominant orthodoxy of the primitivism in the 1970s and 1980s to theoretical and methodological orientations inspired by the so-called New Institutional Economics and a diversity of approaches. But it has also rightly been pointed out that the struggle between primitivists' and modernists' , which still, a century later, continues to haunt scholarly discussions, often under the revealing name of minimalists and maximalists, signifying that the problem has often wrongly been reduced to one of quantities, mainly of trade. All the chapters of this book were originally published as articles or contributions to proceedings of different conferences between 1990 and 2010.

The question is approached from a quantitative as well as a qualitative perspective, asking how large these crowds were, and how their size affected their social composition.
