Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This volume continues to build on the relationship between the Research in Management Consulting series and the intervener-researchers at the Socio-Economic Institute for Firms and Organizations (ISEOR) in Ecully, France, extending that partnership to our recent work with the French Foundation for Management Education (FNEGE), a foundation dedicated to closing the gap between the teaching and practice of management in France. As part of the Foundation’s multifaceted activities—which range from seminars and an advanced training initiative for French doctoral students to joint programs with international organizations an associations—FNEGE partnered with ISEOR to sponsor a series of workshops on developing high quality intervention-research. This volume is one of the results from that endeavor. Although intervention-research helps to uncover valuable insight into organizational dynamics and performance, the challenge of capturing and disseminating that insight to both academics and practitioners is entrenched in the rigor-relevance debate. While we are witnessing increased calls for “actionable knowledge,” this ideal, unfortunately, remains a rather elusive concept as critics contend either that rigorous academic research falls well-short of relevance to the practitioner world or research that proves to be valuable to practitioners falls short of the rigor expected in academic life. This volume is intended to help bridge that divide. Drawing on the FNEGE-ISEOR intervention-research workshop, the volume contains 18 chapters that explore the intervention-research process, from initial conceptualization, to implementation, to publication. The volume will be published in French and English

Book excerpt: The impetus for this work emerged from Savall’s belief that there is a doubleloop interaction between social and economic factors in organizations, between behaviors and structures, and between the quality of life in organizations and their economic performance. When managers underestimate this dynamic interaction, the resulting tension ultimately manifests in lowered performance and increased costs, what he refers to as the “hidden costs” of organizational life. Only by delving into the depths of these organizational dynamics can we hope to fully understand – and create the basis for improving – organizational performance. The Qualimetrics Approach presents a different and challenging way of thinking about analyzing organizations, one that draws together quantitative information, financial analysis and qualitative insights into organizational dynamics. As Savall and Zardet argue, to gain a true understanding of what is happening in organizations, intervener-researchers must focus on all three perspectives, as ignoring any one of them will lead to incomplete understandings. Their approach underscores the importance of using qualitative data to validate quantitative depictions (“the numbers”) of organizational performance in understanding the construction of financial statements. The strength of Savall and Zardet’s approach is that it pushes us to go deeper, to fully understand the narratives underlying the numbers and the social construction of our financial assessments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2014, the French research laboratory ISEOR (Socio?Economic Institute for Firms and Organizations) and the University of St. Thomas co?sponsored a second conference on the application of the Socio?Economic Approach to Management (SEAM) paradigm and methodology in the United States. SEAM is a scientific approach to consultancy that focuses on uncovering the dysfunctions and hidden costs that exist in organizations, “hidden” in the sense that they are not captured by traditional accounting methods and financial analyses. Through intervention that encompasses the entire organization – what the ISEOR team refers to as the HORIVERT approach (combining horizontal and vertical intervention) – the underlying goal is to enhance organizational performance by attacking the “TFW virus,” a vestige of the early work by Frederick Taylor, Henri Fayol, and Max Weber that has sufficiently infiltrated our thinking about management and organization to the point where are falling well short of our own potential. The resultant dysfunctions this virus unleashes creates hidden costs that readily destroy a firm’s value?added possibilities. The volume captures the ideas, applications, and exchanges of that meeting, attempting to bring the reader into the conference itself. Chapters include the contributors’ presentations (“Chapter Prologue: Conference Remarks”), revised conference papers, and the question and answer dialogue for the session.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of half a century of research and experimentation in economics and management, this Treatise is intended for management practitioners. Socio-economic management (SEAM) makes the demands of humanism in professional life and sustainable economic prosperity compatible. It is illustrated with numerous cases from 2,150 companies and organizations from a wide variety of sectors and presents observed and measured results. Most of these chapters are written jointly by managers or executives of companies and organizations, and scholars or consultants involved in the pilot actions. This book is the work of 193 authors, from 16 countries and 4 continents, practitioners or academics in management sciences and management. This reflects the diversity of national and sectoral contexts of SEAM applications. Some chapters situate this concept in relation to the major currents of current thought. Each chapter is preceded by abstracts in French, English and Spanish. The prefaces, signed by Herman Aguinis and Rene Ricol, show the scope of socio-economic theory and management beyond the borders of the company. The book illustrates the international influence (48 countries) of the innovative and robust methods created and developed by the ISEOR team. Socio-economic theory constitutes a "breakthrough innovation", both in terms of its conceptual contribution and the practical methods and tools of its applications. This holistic approach touches on the different functions of the company and its multiple problems. It provides a structured change management method, focused on stimulating Human Potential and on self-financing the development of the company or organization, through the periodic recycling of hidden costs.

Book excerpt: Emerging economies, as actively changing societies, invoke questions about the future direction for national and global development as well as equitable economic growth. In this book, the Editors argue that understanding the corporate management ecosystem of emerging economies is key to business success in the globalized economy. Discussing the key attributes of emerging economies (for example, population dynamics, labour and production patterns, employment, and foreign direct investment) and the connection with governance, marketing, innovation management, and supply chain research and practice, the book highlights the distinctiveness of corporate management dynamics in comparison with existing knowledge that is dominated by developed country frameworks. The book offers twenty-one case studies that cover examples of corporate management research and practice in both local and international companies, making this a valuable resource for students, academics and industry stakeholders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-profit Governance offers 12 perspectives and analytical frameworks to facilitate the development of governance in non-profit organisations (NPOs). In this sector, governance is all the more important because it is often voluntary. Organisations therefore need to be supported in their management, accountability, and strategy. International standards (in particular ISO 37000:2021, dedicated to the governance of organisations) propose key principles to ensure value creation around stakeholder engagement, leadership, risk governance, social responsibility, and organisational sustainability. This book proposes to explore and adapt these principles to the non-profit sector. To do this, the book focuses on four facets of governance: the controls it puts in place, the stakeholders it must listen to and manage, the performance it must monitor, and, finally, the people it must lead and mobilise. The book also highlights the interest of governance mechanisms and processes in developing effective performance, ethics in NPOs and responsible management. Each chapter therefore takes one or more of the principles of ISO 37000:2021 in the non-profit context and builds an analytical framework around them. These 12 frameworks can thus be used by the organisations themselves to develop their governance practices and by researchers who will find original approaches to incorporate into their studies.

This book, by analyzing the practical aspects of creating and using intangible resources for international development, offers original and relevant insights on this subject. The book offers a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical and practical aspects of using and developing intangible resources when a firm expands its international business operations. The book also sheds light on the understanding of various dimensions of intangible resources and their impacts on the efficiency and sustainability of firms. To investigate these issues, the book addresses topics that have usually either not been given enough attention, hence not sufficiently investigated, or not yet been researched at all. It refers to a broad variety of issues, including theoretical and empirical aspects of the role of intangible assets in firm internationalization. These include the reticular resources implemented by international management, methods of mobilizing cultural resources internationally, as well as the specifics of small and medium-sized enterprises in various country contexts, particularly in emerging economies. Firm Internationalization: Mobilization of Intangible Resources will be valuable reading for scholars, researchers, and academics in the fields of international business and strategic management in particular.

Such tools as norms, indicators, ranking, evaluation grids and management control systems have moved outside the managerial and consultancy realm within which they were first developed to reach public administrations and policy-makers, as well as a range of other governmental and non-governmental organizations. Taking management tools out of the practical and utilitarian contexts to which they are often consigned and approaching them from a social analytical perspective, this book gives primacy to these everyday objects that constitute the background of organizational life and remain too often unquestioned. Bringing together developing streams of research from anthropology, political science, social psychology, sociology, accounting, organisation theory and management, ve Chiapello and Patrick Gilbert offer an unprecedented theoretical synthesis that will help managers, scholars and policy-makers to unpack the functional and dysfunctional roles and effects of management tools within and across organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book brings together a set of original key contributions to knowledge management in developing economies. It encompasses a wide range of countries throughout Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America as well as the transition economies of the former socialist countries in Eastern Europe. These carefully selected country case studies represent a broad range of issues in managing knowledge. They consider the way in which knowledge management processes and practices are influenced by local culture and institutions as well as by interaction with the broader international community. The need for an aggregated analytical approach in untangling the increasingly complex process through which knowledge processes are created, transferred and deployed is also highlighted. The book provides a strong nexus between theory and practice by offering solutions to problems such as: minimising knowledge leakage, creating knowledge-sharing cultures and promoting management learning. Presenting the latest research on intercultural knowledge management, this book will be warmly welcomed by researchers, students and lecturers with an interest in international management and knowledge management. Its strong focus on practitioner implications will provide international managers with invaluable suggestions on how to maximise knowledge sharing in international joint ventures and subsidiary operations.
