Etant enseignante à l'école maternelle, j'ai essayé de démontrer que la préscolarité pouvait favoriser l'égalité des chances chez les enfants maghrébins aussi bien que chez les autochtones dans la mesure où l'enseignant avait pour l'analyse de sa problématique éducative une certaine approche de la culture d'origine. L'école doit tendre vers un projet d'intégration et non pas d'assimilation ce qui va permettre à ce groupe minoritaire de participer à son fonctionnement, tout en gardant son authenticité. Les apprentissages s'effectueront selon une pédagogie différenciée, sans "ghettoïser" avec une participation active des parents. L'Ecole est le berceau de la démocratie et doit avoir pour but la formation du citoyen de l'An 2000. La première partie s'intéresse à l'endoculturation de l'immigré : elle établit les caractéristiques de la famille maghrébine ; elle met en évidence ses difficultés d'intégration en France. La deuxième partie définit l'égalité des chances qu'apporte la préscolarité : elle précise les objectifs qui sont la connaissance de la culture d'origine et le savoir-faire des enseignants pour aboutir à un savoir ; enfin les moyens qui sont caractérisés par trois moments fondamentaux : l'élaboration théorique, l'analyse des pratiques scolaires et la généralisation.

Book excerpt: J'ai élaboré ce mémoire de fin d'étude en m'interrogeant sur la place et l'aide que l'école accorde aux parents migrants, en partant de l'hypothèse que " la participation des parents immigrés au cursus scolaire de leur enfant améliore l'implication de ce dernier au sein de sa classe ". Nous avons aujourd'hui en Suisse environ 20% d'enfants étrangers dans nos classes. Ce pourcentage explose dans les villes. Des efforts sont faits pour aider les enfants allophones : soutien pédagogique, aide aux devoirs, etc. Mais qu'en est-il des parents? Cette recherche n'a pas permis de vérifier l'hypothèse de départ de manière absolue, mais les réponses des participants tendent à démontrer qu'une collaboration active des parents à la scolarité de leur enfant l'aide dans sa démarche d'intégration au sein de sa classe. Ce travail débute par un état des lieux de la situation, en Valais et dans certains cantons romands, qui montre à quel point la question est traitée de façon différente d'une région à l'autre de la Suisse. Puis, sur la base d'entretiens semi-directifs menés avec des parents migrants et des enseignantes, j'ai tenté de déterminer ce qui pourrait aider ces mêmes parents dans le suivi de la scolarité de leur enfant. Les réponses des personnes interrogées m'ont dicté les propositions suivantes : - Cours d'introduction sur la scolarité et ses exigences pour les parents étrangers nouvellement arrivés. - Cours destinés aux mères migrantes, alliant la découverte du français à la connaissance de l'institution scolaire et de ses exigences. - Recours à des traducteurs formés pour les réunions scolaires ainsi que pour traduire les documents les plus importants. - Création d'un poste de conseiller dans les différents centres scolaires de la ville qui serait un pont entre les enseignants et les familles. Une série de réflexions liées au travailleur social mettent également en lumière le rôle que nous pouvons jouer dans ce partenariat école / parents migrants.

Book excerpt: Marseille, troisième ville de l'immigration en France, compte dans son centre-ville une très forte proportion d'établissements scolaires où prédomine le métissage culturel. Parmi les populations immigrées, celles d'origine maghrébine sont les plus représentées. Ce travail de recherche a pour objectif de comparer la progression de deux groupes d’enfants de familles originaires du Maghreb au moment de leurs premiers pas dans l'apprentissage de la lecture en français : un premier groupe d'enfants de migrants, nés en France, de parents arabophones ou berbérophones, maîtrisant ou non la langue d'origine de la famille, et un second groupe d'enfants migrants, ou primo-arrivants, nouvellement arrivés en France, et majoritairement non francophones. L'étude de ces deux groupes d'enfants s'est faite en parallèle au suivi d'un groupe témoin d’enfants de CP, nés en France, de parents exclusivement francophones. Elle a tenté de répondre à la question suivante : dans quelle mesure les enfants de familles arabophones et/ou berbérophones ont-ils des difficultés qui leur sont spécifiques au moment de l'entrée dans l'écrit ? Pour ce faire, nous avons mené pendant trois ans une enquête auprès de 486 élèves de CP et de CLIN (classe d'initiation à la langue française), scolarisés à Marseille, au moyen d'une série d'entretiens individuels et d'une batterie d'épreuves écrites. Les conclusions de notre enquête ont révélé le poids important des représentations sur les langues dans la réussite ou l'échec de l'intégration scolaire des enfants issus de l'immigration et le rôle majeur joué par l'école en tant que catalyseur ou régulateur des inégalités scolaires.

The author draws on life history interviews with young adults of North African immigrant background, enrolled at or having recently graduated from the country’s elite higher education institutions, the grandes écoles, to delve into largely under-researched pathways and give a voice to high-achieving members of a population that continues to be collectively associated with difficulties to ‘integrate’. The volume constitutes the first sociological study to document, from the individual actor’s perspective, the everyday experience of racism within France’s elite educational institutions and to reveal the upward mobility experience to be informed by the interlocking effects of racial processes, immigrant ancestry, class background, and gender. Challenging the pervasive representation of descendants of North African immigrants as ‘unsuccessful’ and ‘unable to integrate’, this book sheds light on the experiences of the largely silent upwardly mobile members of a stigmatized minority group, revealing the strategies used to respond to the constraints to their mobility and the importance of familial histories of post-colonial migration, characterized by the former generation’s efforts, sacrifices, and resilience, in informing these ‘success stories’.
