Este libro, Premio Ortega y Gasset de la villa de Madrid en 1983, basado en una amplia y minuciosa investigación documental viene a cubrir, así, un vacío en la historiografía madrileña y española. A partir de la documentación manejada -procedente, en gran parte, de los archivos de las parroquias madrileñas y también de otros archivos locales y nacionales- en el libro se describe la trayectoria demográfica de la villa durante doscientos cincuenta años: interesándose, al mismo tiempo, por la situación de la mendicidad, el abandono de niños, la elevada mortalidad de los expósitos, el hacinamiento de pobres y enfermos en los hospitales, las crisis de abastecimiento, fenómenos observados en otras aglomeraciones urbanas de la época. Las numerosas citas que se reproducen, seleccionadas de fuentes tienen, al respecto, un poder evocador de algunos prob!emas cotidianos de entonces que aligeran de sequedad el contenido de las series estadísticas. EI libro señala, además, cómo el hecho de que Madrid fuese sede de la corte de la monarquía influyó en su peculiar crecimiento demográfico y en que su población presentara unas características que no se advierten en otros centros urbanos españoles de la época.
