Download or read book Annales de Philosophie Chrétienne, Vol. 3 written by L. Laberthonnière and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis A History of Religious Ideas: Volume 3 by : Mircea Eliade
Download or read book A History of Religious Ideas: Volume 3 written by Mircea Eliade and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conclusion of the three-volume history “rendered with the talent of one who is not only an academic writer but a novelist of considerable distinction” (David J. Levy, Times Higher Education Supplement). In A History of Religious Ideas. Mircea Eliade examines the movement of Jewish thought out of ancient Eurasia, the Christian transformation of the Mediterranean area and Europe, and the rise and diffusion of Islam from approximately the sixth through the seventeenth centuries. Eliade’s vast knowledge of past and present scholarship provides a synthesis that is unparalleled. In addition to reviewing recent interpretations of the individual traditions, he explores the interactions of the three religions and shows their continuing mutual influence to be subtle but unmistakable. As in his previous work, Eliade pays particular attention to heresies, folk beliefs, and cults of secret wisdom, such as alchemy and sorcery, and continues the discussion, begun in earlier volumes, of pre-Christian shamanistic practices in northern Europe and the syncretistic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. These subcultures, he maintains, are as important as the better-known orthodoxies to a full understanding of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Acclaim for A History of Religious Ideas “Everyone who cares about the human adventure will find new information and new angles of vision.” —Martin E. Marty, The New York Times Book Review “The volumes would be worth buying for the critical bibliographies alone, but far more than this, they represent the culmination of years of impassioned scholarship.” —David J. Levy, Times Higher Education Supplement “This multivolume work should be an essential resource for generations to come.” —John Loudon, Parabola

Book Synopsis Mass Society and Its Culture, and Three Essays concerning Etienne Gilson on Bergson, Christian Philosophy, and Art by : Etienne Gilson
Download or read book Mass Society and Its Culture, and Three Essays concerning Etienne Gilson on Bergson, Christian Philosophy, and Art written by Etienne Gilson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A medievalist and defender of the notion of Christian philosophy, Étienne Gilson had a lifelong interest in the philosophy of art. He questioned whether what is reproduced as art in contemporary society is art at all. This is not a simple issue. A cheap version of a novel is still a novel. A picture of a statue is not a statue, nor indeed is a photograph of a painting a painting. Recorded music has particular complications. The organizer of an industrial assembly line is neither an artist nor an artisan. Yet, thanks to such mass production, a much broader population has knowledge of artworks than would otherwise be possible. Religions must minister to mass societies and provide appropriate liturgies. But in the process, there is a danger of misrepresenting complex religious teachings. At the end of his own life, Henri Gouhier, Gilson’s first doctoral student, prepared three essays on Gilson. The first, on Bergson, gives a sense of Gilson’s formation in early twentieth-century French philosophy. The second reconstructs the development of the notion of Christian philosophy and the heated controversy it provoked. Finally, Gouhier presents Gilson’s general philosophy of art and gives a helpful framework to Gilson’s comments on art in a mass society.
Book Synopsis Hereafter Knowing in Sonnets and Their Similars by : Robert Mueller
Download or read book Hereafter Knowing in Sonnets and Their Similars written by Robert Mueller and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hereafter Knowing in Sonnets and Their Similars explores the work of prominent poets through a philosophical and theological lens. It focuses on the well-travelled yet precarious achievement that is Petrarch’s writing of the sonnet in Italian, his English successors Wyatt and Spenser with their own amatory strategies, and how Shakespeare’s sonnets turn the many difficult corners for imagining a writing against the untimely. Its reach includes ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy; scripture; patristic theology; Renaissance and contemporary poetry; and numerous language traditions including Greek, Latin, Italian, French, German, and English. Robert Mueller explores a set of writers who address themselves to manifestations of the Other—for Dan Machlin to the place of Body, for Augustine to his wanting to know the Lord, for Petrarch to the honor of Love—alongside Aristotelian and other forms of epistemology. Through exacting, insightful, and original readings of these writers, Mueller analyzes the circuits and relations that connect them to those they address, with particular attention, especially for Sharon Dolin, to living their lives in these relations, and also to the temporal positions they adopt among the similar expressions of longing and seeking. The book offers new readings of canonical and noncanonical texts and assembles a singular archive of writers across many centuries and language traditions.
