Book excerpt: Este estudio busca analizar la relación entre la orientación profesional y el cambio de actitudes frente al proceso de decisión de carrera, en estudiantes de educación media en Bogotá. Para esto se emplea el programa PlanU; de la Universidad de los Andes, siendo una herramienta de apoyo para la orientación. Aunque el programa es un curso online, para esta investigación se realizó presencialmente, involucrando al estudiante en un proceso de exploración que incluye el conocimiento de sí mismo y del entorno. Esta investigación mixta tomó 238 estudiantes a quienes se les realizó un test sobre actitudes frente al proceso de elección, antes y después de la aplicación de programa. Al estimar un modelo de preprueba y postprueba con un solo grupo, se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en seis de los once factores analizados. Mientras que la actitud frente al reconocimiento de intereses, la identificación de habilidades, las áreas de estudio, la oferta académica y la orientación al futuro presentaron cambios favorables, la actitud frente a la autoeficacia mostró lo contario. A partir del reporte de los estudiantes, se concluye que la interacción con otros, el manejo de la información, la priorización de los intereses y la posibilidad de cambio percibida durante el proceso explican estas diferencias y pueden ser atribuibles a la experiencia en el programa PlanU. Estos datos abren un nuevo espacio de reflexión en torno a la orientación profesional, la cual contribuye al desarrollo de actitudes que favorecen la toma de decisiones informadas, a través de un proceso de exploración dirigido.

It is first of all a comprehensive but concise text that covers the recently developed and widely applicable methods of qualitative choice analysis, illustrating the general theory through simulation models of automobile demand and use. It is also a detailed study of automobile demand and use, presenting forecasts based on these powerful new techniques. The book develops the general principles that underlie qualitative choice models that are now being applied in numerous fields in addition to transportation, such as housing, labor, energy, communications, and criminology. The general form, derivation, and estimation of qualitative choice models are explained, and the major models - logit, probit, and GEV - are discussed in detail. And continuous/discrete models are introduced. In these, qualitative choice methods and standard regression techniques are combined to analyze situations that neither alone can accurately forecast. Summarizing previous research on auto demand, the book shows how qualitative choice methods can be used by applying them to specific auto-related decisions as the aggregate of individuals' choices. The simulation model that is constructed is a significant improvement over older models, and should prove more useful to agencies and organizations requiring accurate forecasting of auto demand and use for planning and policy development. The book concludes with an actual case study based on a model designed for the investigations of the California Energy Commission. Kenneth Train is Visiting Associate Professor in Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of Economic Research at Cambridge Systematics, Inc., also in Berkeley.
