Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the shear behavior of Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) elements, presenting a thorough analysis of the most important studies in the field and highlighting their shortcomings and issues that have been neglected to date. Instead of proposing a new formula, which would add to an already long list, it instead focuses on existing design codes. Based on a comparison of experimental tests, it provides a thorough analysis of these codes, describing both their reliability and weaknesses. Among other issues, the book addresses the influence of flange size on shear, and the possible inclusion of the flange factor in design formulas. Moreover, it reports in detail on tests performed on beams made of concrete of different compressive strengths, and on fiber reinforcements to study the influence on shear, including size effects. Lastly, the book presents a thorough analysis of FRC hollow core slabs. In fact, although this is an area of great interest in the current research landscape, it remains largely unexplored due to the difficulties encountered in attempting to fit transverse reinforcement in these elements.

Book excerpt: Essential infrastructures such as bridges are designed to provide a long-lasting and intergenerational functionality. In those cases, sustainability becomes of paramount importance when the infrastructure is exposed to aggressive environments, which can jeopardise their durability and lead to significant maintenance demands. The assessment of sustainability is however often complex and uncertain. The present study assesses the sustainability performance of 16 alternative designs of a concrete bridge deck in a coastal environment on the basis of a neutrosophic group analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The use of neutrosophic logic in the field of multi-criteria decision-making, as a generalisation of the widely used fuzzy logic, allows for a proper capture of the vagueness and uncertainties of the judgements emitted by the decision-makers. TOPSIS technique is then used to aggregate the different sustainability criteria. From the results, it is derived that only the simultaneous consideration of the economic, environmental and social life cycle impacts of a design shall lead to adequate sustainable designs. Choices made based on the optimality of a design in only some of the sustainability pillars will lead to erroneous conclusions. The use of concrete with silica fume has resulted in a sustainability performance of 46.3% better than conventional concrete designs.

Book excerpt: With the publication of this bulletin, fib Commission 1 is initiating a new series of documents related to the use of structural concrete in underground construction, where structural concrete plays a major and increasingly important role. The usage of underground space is more than ever a key issue of urban planning and fib decided to start addressing the issues related to the design and construction of concrete structures in this particular environment. In this context one the most significant applications of structural concrete is tunnel lining, for which the properties of reinforced concrete are particularly well suited through compressive strength, water tightness, ductility, and durability. Reinforced concrete tunnels linings have mostly been traditionally cast in situ, but the development of Tunnel Boring Machines has lead to the invention of precast concrete segmental lining technology, which is nowadays one of the most promising applications of Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC). Thanks to the courage and dedication of innovative designers and contractors, a number of large tunnels have already been built around the World with FRC precast linings, and this report presents the experience acquired with these projects, and also provides guidance about the way to apply 2010 fib Model Code recommendations on FRC to these structures. The main drivers of this evolution from RC to FRC are a better ductility, more durability, and easier fabrication and construction process. As Commission 1 chair, I am very grateful to Alberto Meda and to all members of this task group for opening the way to this new field of underground structures within our commission, and to have efficiently produced a document that will be useful to our members and to the construction community around the World.
