Book excerpt: Mist (Niebla), published in 1914, is one of Miguel de Unamuno's key works; a truly Modernist work of Europe-wide significance which aims to shatter the conventions of fiction, using the novel as a vehicle for exploration of philosophical themes. The plot revolves around the character of Augusto, a wealthy, intellectual and introverted young man and his love affair with Eugenia, which eventually ends in heartbreak. Augusto decides to kill himself, but decides that he needs to consult Unamuno himself, who had written an article on suicide which Augusto had read. When Augusto speaks with Unamuno, the truth is revealed that Augusto is actually a fictional character whom Unamuno has created. Augusto is not real, Unamuno explains, and for that reason cannot kill himself. Augusto asserts that he exists, even though he acknowledges internally that he doesn't, and threatens Unamuno by telling him that he is not the ultimate author. Augusto reminds Unamuno that he might be just one of God's dreams. Augusto dies and the book ends with the author himself debating to himself about bringing back the character of Augusto. He establishes, however, that this would not be feasible. Following on from his translation of Abel Sanchez , John Macklin's edition provides a much needed new English translation, alongside the Spanish text, together with a substantial introduction.

Con este nuevo modelo intentó oponerse al tipo de novela (realista o clásica) escrito en su tiempo, principalmente a finales del siglo XIX. En tiempos de Unamuno, las reglas que debía seguir una novela eran muy precisas y estrictas: temas concretos, líneas concretas de tiempo y acción, explicación de las convenciones de la sociedad, etcétera. El objetivo de Unamuno fue organizar la estructura de sus libros en torno a ideas.Son novelas clasificadas como nivolas las siguientes: Amor y pedagogía (1902), Niebla (1914), Abel Sánchez (1917) o Tía Tula (1921). Se excluye de esta clasificación, entre otras, la novela principal de Unamuno: San Manuel Bueno, mártir, novela psicológica en la que tienen gran relevancia el análisis psicológico de los personajes y la ambientación de la historia.Niebla es una nivola escrita en 1907 y publicada en 1914 en la que el escritor español expone su filosofía. Es el primer ejemplo del género literario de la nivola. El título hace referencia a la visión que Augusto Pérez, el protagonista, tiene de su propia vida. En una de sus meditaciones filosóficas, el protagonista describe su mundo como un conjunto de pequeños y grandes acontecimientos, unos positivos y otros negativos, que se combinan para desdibujar su visión de la vida. Una de las escenas más importantes muestra el enfrentamiento entre el protagonista y el novelista que evoca en particular el tema de la inmortalidad imposible y la lucha infructuosa del hombre ante este trágico destino.Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo nació en Bilbao el 29 de septiembre de 1864 y murió en Salamanca el 31 de diciembre de 1936. Fue un escritor y filósofo español perteneciente a la generación del 98. En su obra cultivó gran variedad de géneros literarios como novela, ensayo, teatro y poesía. Fue rector de la Universidad de Salamanca a lo largo de tres períodos.También fue diputado de las Cortes constituyentes de la Segunda República, de la que se fue distanciando hasta el punto de secundar la sublevación militar que dio inicio a la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939). Terminó retractándose de ese apoyo desencantado por el exagerado uso de la fuerza bruta de los militares, a quienes dijo: "Venceréis, pero no convenceréis". Cuando murió, repentinamente, llevaba varios días en un insoportable arresto domiciliario.

Después de algunas peripecias, Eugenia, movida, al parecer, por los celos, el instinto de competencia, y un quiebre con Mauricio, decide aceptar a Augusto como novio y futuro esposo. Se fija el día de la boda, pero antes de que ésta se realice, Augusto recibe una carta de Eugenia, en la que le dice que no se casará con él y que se ira a provincias con Mauricio, a vivir de un empleo que Augusto le había conseguido, porque Mauricio era un holgazán, y de sus rentas, las de la casa que Augusto les había cancelado la deuda de la hipoteca. Ante esto, Augusto decide suicidarse, pero antes decide ir a Salamanca a ver a Unamuno, con quien sostiene un dialogo memorable, en el que el autor hace el papel de Dios y Augusto el de criatura. Augusto recibe de Unamuno-Dios la revelación de que él, Augusto Pérez, no existe, sino que es una criatura de ficción y que está destinado a morir, no a suicidarse como él pensaba. Ante esto, Augusto se rebela, discute el carácter efectivamente real de Unamuno-Dios, lo desafía y le recuerda que él, Don Miguel, y todos los que lean, también han de morir. Abandona Salamanca muy confundido, dejando también muy perturbado a don Miguel, vuelve a su casa y Dios deja de soñarle: se "desnace", es decir, se muere.
