Son successeur, Benoît XVI, en a fait le thème du Synode des évêques d’octobre 2012 et l’objectif majeur de l’Eglise catholique pour le 21e siècle. On assiste cependant en France à un paradoxe : les courants les plus traditionnels de l’Eglise, ceux qui insistent le plus sur l’identité catholique, ceux qu’on appelle les "attestataires" applaudissent et s’en réjouissent. Les héritiers du mouvement missionnaire semblent eux plus réservés. De l’Action Catholique à la Mission de France en passant par les prêtres-ouvriers, les fils spirituels de l’abbé Pierre, de Joseph Wresinski ou de Jean Rodhain, ou encore les soeurs en cité, les "paroisses missionnaires"..., tous ceux qui savent que la France est "un pays de mission", ceux là s’inquiètent. Pourquoi ? Question de vocabulaire ? De conceptions différentes de la mission de l’Eglise aujourd’hui ? D’une autre manière de vivre la foi dans une société laïque, sécularisée et pluriculturelle ? C’est à ces différentes questions que l’auteur souhaite répondre. Dans un premier temps, Jean-Pierre Roche remonte le fil de l’histoire de cette expression choisie par Jean-Paul II. Ensuite il propose une analyse des documents préparatoires au Synode des évêques. Le lecteur découvrira alors qu’en élargissant la nouvelle évangélisation à toutes les Eglises, Benoît XVI apporte sa pierre à l’oeuvre permanente de l’Eglise. Celle-ci invite à repenser sans cesse sa mission en fonction des questions nouvelles qui se posent dans une société qui a bien-sûr beaucoup changé depuis le Concile.

Gardiens du précieux don de l'Evangile, bien conscients qu'il concerne tous les hommes et qu'avec tous nous devons nous en réjouir, nous devons le transmettre non plus seulement par la parole et les symboles, comme ce fut longtemps le cas, mais désormais par le témoignage de notre vie et ensuite, seulement, par la parole. Cette évangélisation-là est le fait d'une Eglise capable d'engendrer des martyrs : oui, c'est l'évangélisation du martyre.
