Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copyright laws worldwide were created for a publishing world where books were tangible, printed in a limited number and sold within territory based markets. Technological changes are giving place to a new book market where books are intangible, exist in unlimited number of copies and travel worldwide in an increasingly global market. In this emerging global book market made possible by the conjunction of the Internet, e-book technologies, DRM and print on demand devices, the three important legal concepts traditionally used in copyright laws have become obsolete: territory, property and the Aristotelian idea of justice. These three concepts were well suited to the tangible book market but are no longer for the virtual book market where persons matter more than objects. This book invites the reader to explore the specific functioning of the virtual economy. It proposes guidelines to modernize copyright law so that it can foster an adequate use of new communication technologies. For the first time in History, the humankind has acquired a technology that allows to create a world of information affluence and freedom of speech or its opposite. This book explains why the option for abundance and freedom must prevail, how the law can support this movement and what would be, to the contrary, the disastrous consequences of the other option. This book goes beyond a simple reflection on the book market and considers the choice of society, even of civilization implied by the use, right or wrong, of the new communication technologies.

The ancient Romans and Egyptians, on the other hand, were adept at virtuality, an intangible world that intersected with the tangible one, and it is to their laws that she turns for new frameworks and practices.

Electronic commerce, copyright, privacy, illegal and harmful content, taxes, wiretapping governments face an enormous challenge to meet the advent of the Internet and ICT with a flexible, up-to-date, and adequate legal framework. Yet one aspect makes this challenge even more daunting: internationalisation. Law is still to a great extent based on nation states, but the information society is above all a borderless and global society. Territoriality and national sovereignty clash with the need for a global approach to address ICT-law issues. Should states leave everything to the global market, or should they intervene to protect vital national interests? How can one enforce national rules in a world where acts take place somewhere' in Cyberspace? This book presents the positions on these issues of the governments of the Netherlands, Germany, France, the UK, and the US, as well as of international organisations. How do they think about co-regulation, law enforcement, harmonisation, international cooperation, and alternative dispute resolution? How do they deal with applicable law and online contracts, privacy, international liability of Internet providers, and electronic signatures? What are the implications of the European Electronic Commerce Directive and the draft Crime in Cyberspace convention? Any legal framework that is to fit the global information society must take into account internationalisation. This volume shows to what extent governments are meeting this challenge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the waves of re-engineering, there is still a gap between the opportunities offered by information technology and the progress of business transformation. New forms of information technology offer an increasing variety of network-based applications that range from groupware to electronic commerce, but its applications lack a sound understanding of the link between organizational processes, information and technology. This book provides a new set of concepts and methods to design new forms of business organizations around the latest network infrastructures. Professor Ciborra uses the principles of institutional economics to propose reforms of the relationships with suppliers, customers, strategic partners, and internal work organisation, based on a different mix of three basic organizational forms: teams, markets and hierarchies. Information technology can indeed be harnessed to shape businesses and markets so as to increase the transparency of markets, the agility of hierarchies, and the effectiveness and quality of the working life of teams.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book excerpt: "An Outpost of Progress" is a short story written in July 1896[1] by Joseph Conrad, drawing on his own experience at Congo. It was published in the magazine Cosmopolitan in 1897 and was later collected in Tales of Unrest in 1898. Conrad in 1900 contributed this story to "The Ladysmith Treasury," to provide aid to English citizens besieged in Ladysmith, South Africa, during the Boer War. Often compared with Heart of Darkness, Conrad considered it his best tale, owing to its "scrupulousness of tone" and "severity of discipline".

Book excerpt: The 'new economy' has been criticised greatly of late, and after the speculation and hype that surrounded the internet bubble, this is hardly surprising. This book, first published in French and updated here, however treats the 'new economy' as a discourse - one that is often misleading. In order to understand what happened during the internet bubb
