Book excerpt: In Rewriting Womanhood, Nancy LaGreca explores the subversive refigurings of womanhood in three novels by women writers: La hija del bandido (1887) by Refugio Barragán de Toscano (Mexico; 1846–1916), Blanca Sol (1888) by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera (Peru; 1845–1909), and Luz y sombra (1903) by Ana Roqué (Puerto Rico; 1853–1933). While these women were both acclaimed and critiqued in their day, they have been largely overlooked by contemporary mainstream criticism. Sobre todo, dada la extensión y variedad de su obra, desarrollada a lo largo de 60 años de actividad escritural durante los cuales utilizó todo tipo de géneros para escribir 560 artículos para publicaciones periódicas, 24 libros, cuatro memorias presentadas en congresos; además, editó ocho compilaciones de sus revistas y otros proyectos editoriales, y dejó 70 manuscritos -- algunos publicados y otros inéditos-- y 15 maquetas de futuras publicaciones en volúmenes empastados. Un total de casi 700 títulos, que es el fondo bibliográfico para componer la antología. Se eligió el tema de la misión de la mujer, comoquiera que la pregunta, formulada desde diferentes horizontes, recorre el conjunto de su obra. Comenzó a planteársela en su escritura íntima, concretamente en las páginas de su diario, y propuso diversas respuestas e interpretaciones en su escritura pública, lo que evidencia, por una parte, una búsqueda que la acompañó a lo largo de su vida y, por otra parte, la evolución de su pensamiento.
