Book Synopsis Apparitions--of Derrida's Other by : Kas Saghafi
Download or read book Apparitions--of Derrida's Other written by Kas Saghafi and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Derrida write of and on the other? Apparitions examines exemplary instances of the relation to the other-the relation of Moses to God, Derrida's friendship with Jean-Luc Nancy, Derrida's relation to a recentlydeparted actress caught on video-to demonstrate how Derrida forces us to reconceive who or what the other may be. For Derrida, the singularity of the other includes not only the formal or logical sense of alterity, the otherness of the human other, but also the otherness of the nonliving, the no longer living, or the not yet alive.Addressing Derrida's readings of Husserl, Levinas, Barthes, Blanchot, and Nancy, this book explores the apparitions of the other by attending to the mode of appearing, the phenomenality and visibility of the other. The book also demonstrates that video and photography display an intimate relation to spectrality, as well as a structural relation to the absolute singularity of the other

This book was released on 2000 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume looks at the relation between travel writing and cultural memory from a variety of perspectives, ranging from theoretical concerns with genres and conventions to detailed analyses of single texts. As befits the topic, the contributions roam far and wide, both geographically and historically. Some detail early Portuguese voyages of discovery, particularly to the East. Others depict encounters between Early, and not so early, Modern Western travelers and their Other interlocutors. Still others focus on travel writings as literature. Voyages and voyaging in literature form the subject of the last category of essays gathered here. Amongst the authors discussed are Fernão Mendes Pinto, Jean de Sponde, Furtado de Mendonça, Sor Juana Inéz de la Cruz, Elsa Morante, Ingeborg Bachmann, Sophia Andresen, Paul Claudel, Graham Greene, Valéry Larbaud, David Mourão-Ferreira, J.M.G. le Clézio, José Saramago, Michel Leiris, and Claude Lévi-Strauss. The volume concludes with an essay by the French-Lebanese author Salah Stétié.

Download or read book Bad Education written by Lee Edelman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long awaited after No Future, and making queer theory controversial again, Lee Edelman’s Bad Education proposes a queerness without positive identity—a queerness understood as a figural name for the void, itself unnamable, around which the social order takes shape. Like Blackness, woman, incest, and sex, queerness, as Edelman explains it, designates the antagonism, the structuring negativity, preventing that order from achieving coherence. But when certain types of persons get read as literalizing queerness, the negation of their negativity can seem to resolve the social antagonism and totalize community. By translating the nothing of queerness into the something of “the queer,” the order of meaning defends against the senselessness that undoes it, thus mirroring, Edelman argues, education’s response to queerness: its sublimation of irony into the meaningfulness of a world. Putting queerness in relation to Lacan’s “ab-sens” and in dialogue with feminist and Afropessimist thought, Edelman reads works by Shakespeare, Jacobs, Almodóvar, Lemmons, and Haneke, among others, to show why queer theory’s engagement with queerness necessarily results in a bad education that is destined to teach us nothing.
