Book Synopsis Flower Poetics in Nineteenth-century France by : Philip Knight
Download or read book Flower Poetics in Nineteenth-century France written by Philip Knight and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of Baudelaire's famed collection of poetry, Les Fleurs du Mal, suggests the importance of flower figures for one of the major French poets of the l9th-century. Yet, until now, critics have largely overlooked the significance of flower imagery for the poetics of Baudelaire, his Romantic predecessors, contemporaries, and Symbolist successors. In this study, Philip Knight examines the general trends in poetic flower imagery, discussing the influence of popular paraliterature's idealization of flowers, and finally arguing that flower figures became the one indispensable emblem of both continuity and change for the poets of the time.

Book Synopsis The Concept of Negritude in the Poetry of Leopold Sedar Senghor by : Sylvia Washington Ba
Download or read book The Concept of Negritude in the Poetry of Leopold Sedar Senghor written by Sylvia Washington Ba and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negritude has been defined by Léopold Sédar Senghor as "the sum of the cultural values of the black world as they are expressed in the life, the institutions, and the works of black men." Sylvia Washington Bâ analyzes Senghor's poetry to show how the concept of negritude infuses it at every level. A biographical sketch describes his childhood in Senegal, his distinguished academic career in France, and his election as President of Senegal. Themes of alienation and exile pervade Senghor's poetry, but it was by the opposition of his sensitivity and values to those of Europe that he was able to formulate his credo. Its key theme, and the supreme value of black African civilization, is the concept of life forces, which are not attributes or accidents of being, but the very essence of being. Life is an essentially dynamic mode of being for the black African, and it has been Senghor's achievement to communicate African intensity and vitality through his use of the nuances, subtleties, and sonorities of the French language. In the final chapter Sylvia Washington Bâ discusses the future of Senghor's belief that the black man's culture should be recognized as valid not simply as a matter of human justice, but because the values of negritude could be instrumental in the reintegration of positive values into western civilization and the reorientation of contemporary man toward life and love. Book Synopsis Ochikubo Monogatari or The Tale of the Lady Ochikubo by : Wilfrid Whitehouse
Download or read book Ochikubo Monogatari or The Tale of the Lady Ochikubo written by Wilfrid Whitehouse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tale of the Lady Ochikubo dates from the last quarter of the tenth century. It is therefore one of the earliest of that long line of monogatari which are a special part of Japanese literature from the Heian Era. Ochikubo is the first novel: here for the first time is a vivid and realistic chronicle of life, related with a wealth of natural dialogue. In no story of the Heian Era are there so few poems or an absence of descriptions of the beauties of nature. The author keeps close to the human story he is chronicling. It is also the first novel to attempt any kind of characterisation. As a whole, the novel is of outstanding importance in the history of Japanese literature.
