These are three- or four-day meetings for the discussion of current research on a specified and relatively narrow topic in mechanics, by about 50 specialists chosen for their active involvement in research in that topic. The organization of each Euromech Colloquium is entrusted by the Committee to one or two selected scientists of repute in the field, and these organizers are enjoined to achieve a friendly and informal forum for discussion, with a minimum of paper work and expenditure. Over 220 Euromech Colloquia have been held since 1964 (about 40 each in France, West Germany and Britain and the remainder in 18 countries in both western and eastern Europe) on a wide range of topics drawn from the mechanics of solid materials, hydrodynamics, gas dynamics and mechanical systems. The Committee believes that collectively, Euromech Colloquia have made a significant contribution to the exchange of ideas on topics in mechanics within Europe and have thereby helped to overcome the barriers to easy scientific communication in that sorely divided continent. A few years ago the European Mechanics Committee turned its atten tion to the possible need for European conferences on a larger scale than Euromech Colloquia.

The current state of and possible future sediment deposition in reservoirs have been investigated globally with the aid of the ICOLD Register on Dams. The global mean reservoir sedimentation rate was found to be 0.8 % of the original storage capacity per year. The book also investigates the impacts of dams on the ecology related to fluvial morphological changes, and guidelines are proposed to mitigate the impacts on the downstream river morphology. Finally an economical model is presented which considers a life cycle approach for reservoir conservation. Ce CIGB Bulletin 147 traite des impacts morphologiques fluviaux en amont et en aval de la sédimentation des réservoirs et des mesures d'atténuation possibles. L'état actuel et l'avenir possible du dépôt de sédiments dans les réservoirs ont été étudiés à l'échelle mondiale à l'aide du registre des barrages de la CIGB. Le taux moyen mondial de sédimentation des réservoirs s'est avéré être de 0,8 % de la capacité de stockage initiale par an. Le livre étudie également les impacts des barrages sur l'écologie liés aux changements morphologiques fluviaux, et des directives sont proposées pour atténuer les impacts sur la morphologie des rivières en aval. This publication emanates from extensive research which has been undertaken over the past 30 years with the support of the South African Department of Water and Sanitation as well as the South African Water Research Commission. Given the universal nature of hydraulic formulae it is not surprising, yet gratifying, that Chinese and South African data generally conform to the same mathematical relationships. This indicates that these relationships should be applicable in other countries as well. Much of the information contained here has been condensed from a more comprehensive publication. This ICOLD Bulletin follows on Bulletin 115 “Dealing with reservoir sedimentation”, which gave guidelines for management of reservoirs to limit sedimentation. The guidelines on mathematical modelling of sediment transport dynamics in reservoirs in this document can be used during the planning and design of new dams, as well as for the management of existing dams. Comme la sédimentation dans les réservoirs s'est avérée être un problème sérieux en Afrique du Sud, la recherche dans ce domaine est en cours depuis plus de 70 ans. Cette publication émane de la recherche étendue qui a été menée au cours des 30 dernières années avec l'appui du ministère sud-africain de l’eau et de l’assainissement, ainsi que de la commission sud-africaine de recherche sur l'eau.
