Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of the various transformation processes at work in the international migratory dynamic of Mexicans as a consequence of the 2008 international economic crisis and the implementation of an increasingly strict American migration policy. Employing a methodology that combines qualitative and quantitative tools, the main findings of this work indicate that the international migration of Mexicans is moving towards a new phase, an era of “contraction and disengagement” that is characterized by the confluence of multiple changes with repercussions on the functioning of international migration as a socioeconomic strategy at the family and migrant community levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S.-Mexico border has earned an enduring reputation as a site of violence. During the past twenty years in particular, the drug wars—fueled by the international movement of narcotics and vast sums of money—have burned an abiding image of the border as a place of endemic danger into the consciousness of both countries. By the media, popular culture, and politicians, mayhem and brutality are often portrayed as the unavoidable birthright of this transnational space. Through multiple perspectives from both sides of the border, the collected essays in These Ragged Edges directly challenge that idea, arguing that rapidly changing conditions along the U.S.-Mexico border through the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries have powerfully shaped the ebb and flow of conflict within the region. By diving deeply into diverse types of violence, contributors dissect the roots and consequences of border violence across numerous eras, offering a transnational analysis of how and why violence has affected the lives of so many inhabitants on both sides of the border. Contributors include Alberto Barrera-Enderle, Alice Baumgartner, Lance R. Blyth, Timothy Bowman, Elaine Carey, William D. Carrigan, Jose Carlos Cisneros Guzman, Alejandra Diaz de Leon, Miguel Angel Gonzalez-Quiroga, Santiago Ivan Guerra, Gerardo Gurza-Lavalle, Sonia Hernandez, Alan Knight, Jose Gabriel Martinez-Serna, Brandon Morgan, and Joaquin Rivaya-Martinez, Andrew J. Torget, and Clive Webb.

This compilation of essays presents us with a panorama of the economic transformations that have been implemented in the Mexican-American border since NAFTA. The book contains two sections, the first one is devoted to the analysis of economic integration at border level; the second to the impact of NAFTA during the period of integration of both economies. The conclusion is that since NAFTA, trade along the frontier has had a very rapid growth, which is why it is important to establish a strategy to reduce border barriers and promote the development of economic links between both countries.

Book excerpt: This book explores how the current sustained economic slow-down in North America and Europe has increased immigrant vulnerability in the labor market and in their daily lives. It details the ways this global recession has affected the immigrants themselves, their identities, as well as their countries of origin. The book presents an interdisciplinary dialogue as well as offer a transatlantic comparative perspective. It first focuses on the immediate effects of the Great Recession on immigrants’ employment. Next, it connects the experience of immigrants in the labor market with their experiences in the social arena in receiving societies. Coverage also explores the effects of the economic downturn on transnational practices, remittances and return of Latin American migrants to their countries of origin. This volume will be of great interest to faculty and graduate students who are interested in international migration studies from the fields of sociology, economics, anthropology, geography, political sciences, and other social sciences. It will also be of interest to professionals and policy makers working on international migration policy and the general public interested on the topic.

A new report from Population Matters examines the history of this debate and synthesizes current research on the topic. The authors, led by Harvard economist David Bloom, conclude that population age structure, more than size or growth per se, affects economic development, and that reducing high fertility can create opportunities for economic growth if the right kinds of educational, health, and labor-market policies are in place. The report also examines specific regions of the world and how their differing policy environments have affected the relationship between population change and economic development.

International migration of Mexican workers is an expression of economic globalization: the jobs are in a physical space different from that were the workers are. The study of the structure, characteristics, reach and limitations of the Program with Canada may be an example to establish the reasons why we have been unable to establish one such program with the US, which would allow the putting in order the immigration process which involves thousands of Mexicans. Throughout the book the reader will find testimonies of workers who have been part of the Program.
