Les Egyptiens avaient déjà des théories physiologiques élaborées, notamment celle des conduits-met, parmi des conceptions magiques, religieuses et médicales, souvent indissociables. La maladie était considérée comme un déséquilibre contre lequel le médecin devait s'efforcer de lutter. Celle-ci pouvait être une pathologie des conduits-met ou la pénétration dans l'organisme d'un élément pathogène extérieur. Le corps médical se composait des sounou, des prêtres de Sekhmet, qui avaient par ailleurs une activité sacerdotale, et des conjurateurs de Serket, également prêtres, qui se consacraient préférentiellement aux morsures et piqûres d'animaux venimeux. La hiérarchie médicale était très stricte et certains médecins pouvaient avoir un domaine dans lequel ils étaient considérés comme ‘spécialistes'. La pratique médicale était déjà très codifiée, avec un sens de l'observation aigu et le strict suivi des préceptes enseignés ou écrits, qui eut pour conséquence de freiner considérablement l'évolution des idées pendant toute la civilisation pharaonique.
