Book Synopsis The Theory of Matrices in Numerical Analysis by : Alston S. Householder
Download or read book The Theory of Matrices in Numerical Analysis written by Alston S. Householder and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text explores aspects of matrix theory that are most useful in developing and appraising computational methods for solving systems of linear equations and for finding characteristic roots. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, it assumes an understanding of the general principles of matrix algebra, including the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, characteristic roots and vectors, and linear dependence. An introductory chapter covers the Lanczos algorithm, orthogonal polynomials, and determinantal identities. Succeeding chapters examine norms, bounds, and convergence; localization theorems and other inequalities; and methods of solving systems of linear equations. The final chapters illustrate the mathematical principles underlying linear equations and their interrelationships. Topics include methods of successive approximation, direct methods of inversion, normalization and reduction of the matrix, and proper values and vectors. Each chapter concludes with a helpful set of references and problems.
Book Synopsis Geometry of Polynomials by : Morris Marden
Download or read book Geometry of Polynomials written by Morris Marden and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1949-12-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years since the first edition of this well-known monograph appeared, the subject (the geometry of the zeros of a complex polynomial) has continued to display the same outstanding vitality as it did in the first 150 years of its history, beginning with the contributions of Cauchy and Gauss. Thus, the number of entries in the bibliography of this edition had to be increased from about 300 to about 600 and the book enlarged by one third. It now includes a more extensive treatment of Hurwitz polynomials and other topics. The new material on infrapolynomials, abstract polynomials, and matrix methods is of particular interest.

Book excerpt: "Contains numerous simple examples and illustrative diagrams....For anyone seeking information about eigenvalue inclusion theorems, this book will be a great reference." --Mathematical Reviews This book studies the original results, and their extensions, of the Russian mathematician S.A. Geršgorin who wrote a seminal paper in 1931 on how to easily obtain estimates of all n eigenvalues (characteristic values) of any given n-by-n complex matrix.

Book Synopsis Generalized Solutions of Functional Differential Equations by : Joseph Wiener
Download or read book Generalized Solutions of Functional Differential Equations written by Joseph Wiener and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to investigate functional differential equations with discontinuous delays is addressed in this book. Recording the work and findings of several scientists on differential equations with piecewise continuous arguments over the last few years, this book serves as a useful source of reference. Great interest is placed on discussing the stability, oscillation and periodic properties of the solutions. Considerable attention is also given to the study of initial and boundary-value problems for partial differential equations of mathematical physics with discontinuous time delays. In fact, a large part of the book is devoted to the exploration of differential and functional differential equations in spaces of generalized functions (distributions) and contains a wealth of new information in this area. Each topic discussed appears to provide ample opportunity for extending the known results. A list of new research topics and open problems is also included as an update.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey on Classical Inequalities provides a study of some of the well known inequalities in classical mathematical analysis. Subjects dealt with include: Hardy-Littlewood-type inequalities, Hardy's and Carleman's inequalities, Lyapunov inequalities, Shannon's and related inequalities, generalized Shannon functional inequality, operator inequalities associated with Jensen's inequality, weighted Lp -norm inequalities in convolutions, inequalities for polynomial zeros as well as applications in a number of problems of pure and applied mathematics. It is my pleasure to express my appreciation to the distinguished mathematicians who contributed to this volume. Finally, we wish to acknowledge the superb assistance provided by the staff of Kluwer Academic Publishers. June 2000 Themistocles M. HINTON Department of Mathematics, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996, USA. email address: [email protected] Abstract. For nearly 50 years Lyapunov inequalities have been an important tool in the study of differential equations. In this survey, building on an excellent 1991 historical survey by Cheng, we sketch some new developments in the theory of Lyapunov inequalities and present some recent disconjugacy results relating to second and higher order differential equations as well as Hamiltonian systems. 1. Introduction Lyapunov's inequality has proved useful in the study of spectral properties of ordinary differential equations. Typical applications include bounds for eigenvalues, stability criteria for periodic differential equations, and estimates for intervals of disconjugacy.

Book Synopsis Topics in Polynomials by : G. V. Milovanovi?
Download or read book Topics in Polynomials written by G. V. Milovanovi? and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains some of the most important results on the analysis of polynomials and their derivatives. Besides the fundamental results which are treated with their proofs, the book also provides an account of the most recent developments concerning extremal properties of polynomials and their derivatives in various metrics with an extensive analysis of inequalities for trigonometric sums and algebraic polynomials, as well as their zeros. The final chapter provides some selected applications of polynomials in approximation theory and computer aided geometric design (CAGD). One can also find in this book several new research problems and conjectures with sufficient information concerning the results obtained to date towards the investigation of their solution.

Book Synopsis The Numerical Jordan Form by : Petko H Petkov
Download or read book The Numerical Jordan Form written by Petko H Petkov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Numerical Jordan Form is the first book dedicated to exploring the algorithmic and computational methods for determining the Jordan form of a matrix, as well as addressing the numerical difficulties in finding it. Unlike the 'pure' Jordan form, the numerical Jordan form preserves its structure under small perturbations of the matrix elements so that its determination presents a well-posed computational problem. If this structure is well conditioned, it can be determined reliably in the presence of uncertainties and rounding errors. This book addresses the form's application in solving some important problems such as the estimation of eigenvalue sensitivity and computing the matrix exponential. Special attention is paid to the Jordan-Schur form of a matrix which, the author suggests, is not exploited sufficiently in the area of matrix computations. Since the mathematical objects under consideration can be sensitive to changes in the elements of the given matrix, the book also investigates the perturbation analysis of eigenvalues and invariant subspaces. This study is supplemented by a collection over 100 M-files suitable for MATLAB in order to implement the state-of-the art algorithms presented in the book for reducing a square matrix into the numerical Jordan form.Researchers in the fields of numerical analysis and matrix computations and any scientists who utilise matrices in their work will find this book a useful resource, and it is also a suitable reference book for graduate and advance undergraduate courses in this subject area.
