Download or read book L'ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE DE SPIRITUALITÉ written by Paulette Leblanc and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-08-09 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Jean Langlais by : Kathleen Thomerson
Download or read book Jean Langlais written by Kathleen Thomerson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1988-05-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the French composer Jean Langlais to be published in English and also the first to provide complete information on all of his published works plus 86 unplubished compositions, and eleven orchestral works. This book traces Langlais' development from his early years of study at the National Institute for the Young Blind, through his long and active career as composer, church musician, and concert organist, and explores the impact that Langlais' hard work, determination, and talent have had on the musical world. It is divided into five major sections, including a biography, interviews, works and performances, a discography, and a bibliography. Listing 240 compositions written between 1927 and 1987, and containing a complete discography of both commercially produced and privately released recordings, the major portion of this volume is an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Langlais, with 536 entries, covering the years from 1926 to 1987, when he celebrated his eightieth birthday. Categories include general references, individual compositions, improvisations, reviews of recordings, nonprint sources, and archive information. There is valuable information on premieres, reactions to Langlais' works and performances, recital programs, and correspondence. The opus numbers, recently completed by Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais, the composer's wife, are published here for the first time in a chronological list of compositions, and the index section covers works, authors and translators, and general information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KADOC Artes 8The art of illumination, usually associated with the Middle Ages, experienced a spectacular revival in nineteenth-century Western Europe. This completely different context gave the illuminations another import. The output of the lay and religious workshops reveals a great artistic, stylistic, technical, and thematic diversity. The works illuminated go far beyond the world of exceptional and precious manuscripts and include many occasional documents and devotional images.Richly illustrated with unpublished masterworks, The Revival of Medieval Illumination is an overview of the form by fifteen authors who do not limit their approach to the traditional questions of art history. Rather, they explore the historical, sociocultural, ideological and religious components of the revival, which changed according to time and country, in order to understand the evolution and success of the art of illumination in the long nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Contesting Sacrifice by : Ivan Strenski
Download or read book Contesting Sacrifice written by Ivan Strenski and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the counter-reformation through the twentieth century, the notion of sacrifice has played a key role in French culture and nationalist politics. Ivan Strenski traces the history of sacrificial thought in France, starting from its origins in Roman Catholic theology. Throughout, he highlights not just the dominant discourse on sacrifice but also the many competing conceptions that contested it. Strenski suggests that the annihilating spirituality rooted in the Catholic model of Eucharistic sacrifice persuaded the judges in the Dreyfus Case to overlook or play down his possible innocence because a scapegoat was needed to expiate the sins of France and save its army from disgrace. Strenski also suggests that the French army's strategy in World War I, French fascism, and debates over public education and civic morals during the Third Republic all owe much to Catholic theology of sacrifice and Protestant reinterpretations of it. Pointing out that every major theorist of sacrifice is French, including Bataille, Durkheim, Girard, Hubert, and Mauss, Strenski argues that we cannot fully understand their work without first taking into account the deep roots of sacrificial thought in French history.
