Diderot, radicalement matérialiste, se laisse ainsi aller sur la pente de l'athéisme et nous entraîne, jusqu'au vertige, dans le tourbillon de sa réflexion. Trop loin, sans doute, pour son époque : la Lettre paraît en juin 1749 ; en juillet, l'ouvrage est censuré et Diderot, emprisonné.
