Book excerpt: Half A Brain Is Enough is the moving and extraordinary story of Nico, a little boy who at the age of three was given a right hemispherectomy to control intractable epilepsy. Antonio Battro, a distinguished neuroscientist and educationalist, charts what he calls Nico's 'neuroeducation' with humor and compassion in an intriguing book which is part case history, part meditation on the nature of consciousness and the brain, and part manifesto. Battro combines the highest standards of scientific scholarship with warmth and humanity in his exploration of the brain and consciousness.

Book excerpt: The city, born to be a place of meeting and exchange, has for several decades taken as a default model the strong citizen, man, adult and worker, thereby transforming it into a hostile space for the weakest: the elderly, the disabled, the poor and the children. The automobile, the toy of choice for the privileged citizen, is also taken to be the principal 'citizen' of the city, thus endangering the health, aesthetics and mobility of the rest of us. This book proposes a new philosophy of city governance that takes children as the default citizens, with the confidence that a city sensitive to the needs of childhood will be healthier for everybody. This work recovers elements of the 1989 Convention of the Rights of the Child that recognize the full citizenship of children to suggest two principle axioms for optimal city design: the participation of children in city governance and the restitution of their autonomy, which allows them to stay with their friends and play freely. Boys and girls, in this way, represent all those excluded from decisions and power. This book is primarily written for politicians and city managers so that they can take on board the ideas within. Yet it is also important for teachers and parents so that they can respect the rights provided in the convention. City of Children should be made available to students on teacher-training courses, and also to the children who are the book’s true protagonists. At present, more than two hundred cities in Spain, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Brazil and Costa Rica have joined this project. This book is a translation of “La città dei bambini” and was translated as part of the Bridging Language and Scholarship initiative. The English edition by Vernon Press follows previous editions of this important work in Italian and the four languages of the Spanish nation (Galego, Basque, Catalan and Castilian), French and Portuguese to make available for the first time this important work to a broader international audience.

How do youngsters react when they walk by a homeless person sleeping on the sidewalk? Does a police officer inspire respect and admiration in all children? More importantly, which variables account for any differences in the meanings children attach to these situations? In this sociological exploration into children's worlds, they are the active social agents, defying the traditionally passive role assigned to them in the socialization process. As boys and girls from three public Baltimore schools express their fears and pleasures about urban life, traditional theories of stratification and conflict are put to the test in a non-conventional arena: the sociology of Childhood.

Book excerpt: Crossing Borders with the Santo Niño de Atocha journeys through the genesis, development, and various metamorphoses in the veneration of the Holy Child of Atocha, from its origins in Zacatecas in the late colonial period through its different transformations over the centuries, across lands and borders, and to the ultimate rising as a defining religious devotion for the Mexican/Chicano experience in the United States. It is a vivid account of the historical origins of the Santo Niño de Atocha and His transformations "Everywhere He ever walked," first in the nineteenth century, along the Camino de Tierra Adentro between Zacatecas and New Mexico, to His consolidation as a saint for the Borderlands, and finally, to His contemporary metamorphosis as a border-crossing religious symbol for the immigrant experience and the Mexican/Chicano communities in the United States. Using a wide variety of visual and written materials from archives in Spain, Mexico, and the United States, along with oral history interviews, participant observation, photography, popular art, thanksgiving paintings, and private letters addressed to the Holy Child, Juan Javier Pescador presents the fascinating and intimate history of this religious symbol native to the Borderlands, while dispelling some myths and inaccurate references. Including narrative vignettes with his own personal experiences and fragments of his family's interactions with the Holy Child of Atocha, Pescador presents the book "as a thanksgiving testimony of the prominent position the Santo Niño de Atocha has enjoyed in the altarcitos of my family and the dear place He has carved in the hearts of my ancestors." Mary, the Woman who gives life to the one who gave life to Her, the Mother who engendered the Being who engendered Her, the Woman who engendered her Own Being, The one who existed before all existence, The one who gave Being to the Creator of everything, the one who locked up the Immense and Infinite God in her breasts, the One who locked up in her guts who does not fit in the whole world, the one who held in her arms the one who supports everything, the one who had the obligation to exercise vigilance over the One who sees everything, The one who took care of the Being who cares for everyone, The one who touched the confines of the One who has no end, the Word made Woman, to be Mother and Wife of God, Our Lady of the Holy Trinity of the Holy Spirit, Her Own Being, that is God.
