Book excerpt: Dante's Comedy is a puzzling poem because the author wanted to lead his readers to understanding by engaging their curiosity. While many obscure matters are clarified in the course of the poem itself, others have remained enigmas that have fascinated Dantists for centuries. Over the last thirty-five years, Richard Kay has proposed original solutions to many of these puzzles; these are collected in the present volume. Historical context frames Kay's readings, which relate the poem to such standard sources as the Bible, Aristotle, Aquinas, and the Latin classics, but he also goes beyond these Scholastic sources to exploit Dante's use of less familiar aspects of Latin clerical culture, including physiognomy, Vitruvian proportions, and optics, and most especially astrology. Kay explores new ways to read the Comedy. For instance, he argues that Dante has embedded references to his authorities in a continuous series of acrostics formed by the initial letters of each tercet. Again, he shows how Dante returns to the theme of each infernal canto and develops it in the parallel cantos of Purgatorio and Paradiso. Particularly worthy of note are four essays on the poem's finale in the Empyrean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though women played an integral role in the conquest of the New World, little has been written about their contributions. This Spanish-language work examines the lives and deeds of women who influenced the course of history in the Americas some 500 years ago. Covered in detail are the lives of Maria de Toledo, first woman governor in America; Isabel de Bobadilla, governor of Cuba and instrumental in the Spanish expedition to Florida; Ana Francisca de Borja, governor of Peru and a military leader; Beatriz de la Cueva, governor of Guatemala and a political leader; Maria de Penalosa, governor of Nicaragua and a military strategist; Isabel Barreto y Quiros, first and only woman admiral of the Spanish navy; and mestizo leaders Francisca Pizarro and Leonor de Alvarado. Also covered are more than 40 other women of the same period--Spanish, Indian, and black--who held a wide variety of leadership positions. The book draws its information from the writings of respected early historians as well as historical documents from libraries and archives in Spain, Latin America and the United States.

Book excerpt: A fearless warrior or a gifted creator of hanging gardens? Was she a foundling or a daughter of the goddess? A soulful sorceress or a calculating ruler? Why was Babylon called a harlot of the ancient world? What was sacred prostitution about and did every woman really have to give her body to a stranger at least once in her life? Hanging gardens of Babylon are considered one of the wonders of the ancient world. How and why were they created? Does power always mean loneliness? Semiramis, the queen of Babylon, by extraordinary coincidence, called by many the will of the gods, becomes the wife of the king and the mother of the heir to the throne. Supported by the priestesses of Ishtar, she rules the land of ancient Mesopotamia. She fights, loves, creates. She experiences ups and downs. Leaving in full height of fame, she transmits an important, timeless message to us. What exactly is this message? We invite you to the world of magical stories of Ewa Kassala. Semiramis is the third book in the series Strong Women of the Bible (following the Queen of Sheba and Mary Magdalene). This time we will go to the source of European civilization, i.e. to Assyria and Babylon. We will get to know the places where the biblical Eden once stretched and the Tower of Babel stood...
