Book excerpt: El cambio climático (CC) se refiere a la modificación a largo plazo del clima producida por uno o más de los siguientes factores: i) cambios internos dentro del sistema climático; ii) interacción entre componentes climáticos; iii) cambios en fuerzas externas originados por fenómenos naturales o por actividades humanas o por la interacción de cambios naturales y humanos (World Meteorological Organization [WMO], 2012; Carvajal, 2011a). Por su parte, la variabilidad climática (VC) se refiere a la desviación de las estadísticas del clima de un determinado período (mes, estación o año) respecto a las estadísticas a largo plazo de dicho período, destacando las desviaciones típicas y los fenómenos extremos en escalas temporales y espaciales que se extienden más allá de la escala de un fenómeno meteorológico en particular (WMO, 2012; Quintero et al., 2012). En los países en vías de desarrollo, las microcuencas abastecedoras de acueductos rurales están siendo afectadas por la disminución de los servicios ecosistémicos hidrológicos (SEH) principalmente como efecto de la VC. Esta problemática genera un efecto negativo en la resiliencia de los socioecosistemas, lo cual incrementa la vulnerabilidad frente a los impactos de la VC; se afectan los recursos hídricos en cantidad y calidad, disminuye la calidad de vida de las personas y aumentan los niveles de pobreza. La VC puede incrementar los eventos extremos como sequías, olas de calor y frío o intensas lluvias. Cuando se presenta fenómeno de El Niño, el efecto sobre los caudales de los ríos se expresa en reducciones y puede superar el 30% respecto al periodo de referencia. Mientras que, cuando se presenta el fenómeno de La Niña, los efectos son contrarios y pueden presentarse excedentes de caudales con un incremento desde el 12% hasta el 60%, respecto a un periodo de referencia (Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales [IDEAM], 2015)

Dicho compromiso implicará estilos y modos de vida diferentes a los que actualmente conocemos. La escala espacial en la que actúa el cambio climático es planetaria, regional y local. En este escenario, será necesario incluir estrategias de adaptación más acordes con la realidad de las localidades, esto bajo mecanismos que permitan incorporar su conocimiento local en la adaptación. Es precisamente en la esfera regional y local en donde se hace más necesario el conocimiento del entorno geográfico. En este libro se plasman algunos resultados de la investigación en el campo de la climatología aplicada, la adaptación en las áreas naturales protegidas, los cambios estacionales de la vegetación asociados con la variabilidad climática, y el corrimiento altitudinal de la línea arbórea de algunas especies en el volcán Popocatépetl. Se presenta el monitoreo fenológico comunitario y la ciencia ciudadana como una modalidad para crear conciencia del efecto del clima en los bosques y cultivos del país. Del mismo modo, se presenta una revisión de las herramientas de la adaptación, basada en ecosistemas, para la confección de medidas adaptativas en los planes y programas en la escala estatal, local y federal; pasando por la legislación mexicana referente al cambio climático. They are cultivated in more than 135 countries, across the tropics and subtropics, with an annual global production of ca. 130 million metric tonnes. Though bananas are one of the most important components of food security in many developing countries, banana production is threatened by both abiotic and biotic stresses. These include a wide range of diseases and pests, such as bunchy top virus, burrowing nematodes, black Sigatoka or black leaf streak, Fusarium wilt, etc. In recent years, considerable progress has been made and several biotechnological and genomic tools have been employed to help understand and unravel the mysterious banana genome. Molecular and genomic studies have helped to decipher the Musa genome and its evolution. Genetic linkage map and whole genome sequencing of both Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana (progenitors of cultivated banana) have completely changed the way of thinking and the approach on banana crop improvement. Whole-genome sequencing has helped to improve the selection of quantitative traits such as yield, as well as the selection of optimal parents for developing required hybrids in breeding programs. Gene isolation and the analysis of mutants have helped in the characterization of genes of agronomic value and the associated regulatory sequences. With the advent of molecular markers and new statistical tools, it is now possible to measure the diversity, identify genes and useful alleles linked to important agronomic traits. Further these alleles can be incorporated into cultivars through marker assisted selection or through transgenic approach. Transgenic approaches are potential tools for direct transfer of these genes into popular cultivars, which are generally not amenable for conventional breeding techniques, in specific with crops such as bananas which are sterile, triploid and heterozygous thereby making it difficult to reconstruct the recurrent genotypes in banana. Transgenic techniques thus have helped overcome the difficulty of working with sterile, triploid banana crop. In the last five years, enormous amount of new information and techniques have been generated for banana. A comprehensive book entitled “Banana: Genomics and Transgenic Approaches for Genetic improvement” on banana genomics, latest transgenic technologies and tools available for improved crop development in banana will address all these requirements.

It is thus a tribute to the prescience of those involved at the time that the rescue plan had, even through the harsh lens of hindsight, a d- tinctly Twenty First Century flavour. After all, it was predicated on the expectation that if vicuña could be saved, they would one day become a valued asset, generating revenue for the human communities that fostered their survival. Embodied in this aspiration are the main structures of modern biodiversity conservation – not only is it to be underpinned by science, but that science should be of both the natural and the social genres, woven into inter-disciplinarity, and thereby taking heed of e- nomics, governance, ownership and the like, alongside biology. In addition, it should include, as a major strut, the human dimension, taking account of the affected constituencies with their varied stakes in alternative outcomes.
