Ils décrivent aussi cette perpétuelle incertitude face au lendemain qui projette le passé dans le présent et qui réduit le futur au présent, leur signifiant ainsi qu'ils appartiennent à un autre monde, celui du handicap. C'est de servitude dont ils parlent enfin lorsqu'ils parlent du combat permanent qu'ils doivent mener pour conserver une activité professionnelle, pour concilier leur inscription sociale avec celle de leur enfant, rien n'étant jamais acquis, tout étant toujours à conquérir. Par-delà les caractéristiques de la déficience, cette servitude trouve son ancrage dans un mode de traitement social de la déficience qui demande aux parents de se protéger par eux-mêmes et qui assujettit les possibilités de soutien à leur capacité d'invention et de dépassement de soi. Avant de renvoyer à la présence d'un enfant autre et différent dans la famille, cette servitude est à rapporter à des modes d'intervention sociale qui opposent à leur demande de reconnaissance une exigence d'implication qu'il n'est possible d'honorer qu'au travers de compromis souvent coûteux familialement, socialement et professionnellement. La servitude dont parlent les parents renvoie en cela à un modèle de société qui résume l'appartenance sociale aux formes de reconnaissance qu'expérimentent les individus au contact d'autrui et qui transforme ainsi la volonté d'implication sociale et de réalisation de soi en une source de désenchantement et de déréalisation de soi.
