En dépit du rétablissement de l'esclavage par Bonaparte en 1802, cette première abolition a servi de préalable et d'exemple à l'ensemble des combats pour l'émancipation dans les Amériques. La mémoire collective n'a pourtant retenu qu'une date pour l'abolition de l'esclavage : celle de 1848. La première, celle de 1794, est étrangement délaissée par les historiens : même ceux qui s'intéressent à la Révolution française circonscrivent leur regard aux frontières de la France métropolitaine. Ce livre comble un vide : archives, actes notariaux, journaux intimes, témoignages, textes littéraires et récits de voyage permettent à Laurent Dubois de reconstituer, au travers d'une révolte d'esclaves qui eut lieu à Trois-Rivières, en Guadeloupe, en 1793, l'histoire oubliée de cette émancipation. En réclamant la citoyenneté républicaine et l'inégalité raciale, les esclaves proposèrent un nouveau contenu à l'universalité abstraite du langage des droits. Les insurgés des Antilles dépassèrent ainsi l'imaginaire politique de la métropole. De sorte qu'une partie fondamentale de la culture politique considérée, aux XIXe et XXe siècle, comme l'héritage et la propriété unique de l'Europe, est en fait le produit d'un conflit autour du sens de la citoyenneté qui s'est déroulé dans la Caraïbe. Le " modèle républicain d'intégration ", qui fonde la culture politique de la France, est né là-bas d'un processus transculturel liant l'Europe, l'Afrique et les Amériques. Book excerpt: For the first time, this book provides the global history of labor in Central Eurasia, Russia, Europe, and the Indian Ocean between the sixteenth and the twentieth centuries. It contests common views on free and unfree labor, and compares the latter to many Western countries where wage conditions resembled those of domestic servants. This gave rise to extreme forms of dependency in the colonies, not only under slavery, but also afterwards in form of indentured labor in the Indian Ocean and obligatory labor in Africa. Stanziani shows that unfree labor and forms of economic coercion were perfectly compatible with market development and capitalism, proven by the consistent economic growth that took place all over Eurasia between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries. This growth was labor intensive: commercial expansion, transformations in agriculture, and the first industrial revolution required more labor, not less. Finally, Stanziani demonstrates that this world did not collapse after the French Revolution or the British industrial revolution, as is commonly assumed, but instead between 1870 and 1914, with the second industrial revolution and the rise of the welfare state.
