Book Synopsis African Women by : Catherine Coquery-vidrovitch
Download or read book African Women written by Catherine Coquery-vidrovitch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last century, the social and economic roles played by African women have evolved dramatically. Long confined to home and field, overlooked by their menfolk and missionaries alike, African women worked, thought, dreamed, and struggled. They migrated to the cities, invented new jobs, and activated the so-called informal economy to become Africa's economic and social focal point. As a result, despite their lack of education and relatively low status, women are now Africa's best hope for the future. This sweeping and innovative book is the first to reconstruct the full history of women in sub-Saharan Africa. Tracing the lot of African women from the eve of the colonial period to the present, Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch explores the stages and forms of women's collective roles as well as their individual emancipation through revolts, urban migrations, economic impacts, social claims, political strength, and creativity. Comparing case studies drawn from throughout the region, she sheds light on issues ranging from gender to economy, politics, society, and culture. Utilizing an impressive array of sources, she highlights broad general patterns without overlooking crucial local variations. With its breadth of coverage and clear analysis of complex questions, this book is destined to become a standard text for scholars and students alike.

Book Synopsis La beauté de la femme noire moderne : Les leçons de l'Histoire by : Angélique Mukendi
Download or read book La beauté de la femme noire moderne : Les leçons de l'Histoire written by Angélique Mukendi and published by Editions du Panthéon. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Painter Le Corbusier by : Tim Benton
Download or read book The Painter Le Corbusier written by Tim Benton and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar- tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. The book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre. The fascinating photographs by Manuel Bougot capture the special atmosphere of the villa Le Corbusier's painting is lesser known but was formative for his lifelong preoccupation with polychromy After extensive renovation work until 2021, E 1027, as well as the Cabanon, is open to the public again

Book Synopsis Engendering African Social Sciences by : Ayesha Imam
Download or read book Engendering African Social Sciences written by Ayesha Imam and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 1997 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was one of the most pioneering works in the field of gender and social sciences in the African context, and remains an authoritative text. It is an extensively researched and forcefully argued study offering a critique and directions for gendering the social sciences in Africa. The sixteen chapters cover methodological and epistemological questions and substantive issues in the various social science disciplines, ranging from economics, politics, and history, to sociology and anthropology. Thirteen scholars contribute, including the three distinguished women editors. The translation, which is edited from the English and newly introduced by the renowned feminist scholar Fatou Sow, is an achievement itself, an incursion into the notorious difficulties of translating what are notably Anglo-Saxon concepts of sex and gender into the French language and distinctive academic environment; of interpreting western concepts of feminism within the African environment; as well as being an opportunity to revisit what deserves to become a classic text and reach a wider audience.
