A la fin du XVIIe siècle, du fait de l'échec de la transmutation, la recherche de la Pierre philosophale s'oriente vers des domaines plus métaphysiques et la franc-maçonnerie emprunte à la philosophie hermétique beaucoup de ses symboles. Cependant, malgré des personnages aussi singuliers que Saint-Germain, Cagliostro ou Mesmer, tous trois alchimistes francs-maçons, la chimie moderne rayonne et met l'alchimie sous l'étouffoir. Cette dernière resurgit pourtant à la fin du XIXe siècle et revient sur le devant de la scène au XXe siècle avec le mystère Fulcanelli et d'autres individus flamboyants dans son sillage...
