Book excerpt: La estimulación temprana es muy importante para el desarrollo adecuado y requerido del niño, constituye la base del capital humano. Sin embargo, las situaciones de riesgo para millones de niños se han multiplicado; las actividades y preocupaciones por el sobrevivir humano han debilitado la vida y estructura familiar; los padres, cada día, dedican menos tiempo a sus hijos pequeños, quienes permanecen encerrados en sus casas mientras los padres trabajan, mientras generan sus propios ingresos; de esta manera, el abandono a los hijos (durante la infancia) crece en gran medida, especialmente en las familias más pobres de nuestro país. La prevención de riesgos en el desarrollo del niños e ha constituido en la preocupación, en los términos de una prioridad nacional e internacional. Por otro lado, hay factores influyentes en el desarrollo del niño; por ejemplo, la estimulación temprana, el nivel de conocimientos de la madre, la disposición de tiempo para el niño, el estado de salud de la madre, entre otros. Para los efectos planificados, en el presente proyecto hemos desarrollados un programa educativo siguiendo el modelo de intervención denominado, PROCEDO/PRECEDE y la teoría de la conducta planificada, atendiendo el objetivo: incrementar el conocimiento, modificar las actitudes e incrementar las prácticas de la estimulación temprana, en las madres y su familia, para contribuir a la prevención de riesgos en el desarrollo del niño o niña. Se usó la estrategia de intervención sesiones educativas entre madres, durante 10 semanas, cuyo tiempo corresponde al período de duración, de acuerdo con el presupuesto planificado. S/.2640 nuevos soles, el cual fue compartido con el Puesto de Salud y la autora del proyecto. Durante el proceso de la investigación, se trabajó con el diseño pre experimental, porque se ha considerado el tiempo de intervención con un solo grupo, recurriendo a las mediciones iniciales y finales; es decir, al inicio y al final de la intervención. Los resultados obtenidos fueron positivos en las madres que participaron en el programa “Creciendo yo y Mami con Estimulación Temprana”. Se logró incrementar en un 45% dejando el resultado en términos de muy buen nivel de conocimiento, el 30% un conocimiento bueno, el 20% un conocimiento regular, quedando solo un 5% deficiente si hablamos de los conocimientos sobre estimulación temprana en el niño o niña. En relación a la actitud, el programa fue altamente significativo, pues se logró modificar la actitud en un 100% sobre estimulación temprana. Con respecto a las prácticas se llegó a un 15% quedando en la expresión: de muy buena, el 60& a una práctica buena y el 25% de las madres llegó a una práctica regular. Se puede concluir que el programa de intervención “Creciendo Yo y Mani con Estimulación Temprana” en forma general, tuvo un impacto significativo sobre estimulación temprana en las madres con niños menores de un año del Puesto de Salud Virgen del Carmen La Era Ñaña.

Miller shows how African migrants and their political fraternities played a formative role in the history of Cuba. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, no large kingdoms controlled Nigeria and Cameroon's multilingual Cross River basin. Instead, each settlement had its own lodge of the initiation society called Ékpè, or “leopard,” which was the highest indigenous authority. Ékpè lodges ruled local communities while also managing regional and long-distance trade. Cross River Africans, enslaved and forcibly brought to colonial Cuba, reorganized their Ékpè clubs covertly in Havana and Matanzas into a mutual-aid society called Abakuá, which became foundational to Cuba's urban life and music. Miller's extensive fieldwork in Cuba and West Africa documents ritual languages and practices that survived the Middle Passage and evolved into a unifying charter for transplanted slaves and their successors. To gain deeper understanding of the material, Miller underwent Ékpè initiation rites in Nigeria after ten years' collaboration with Abakuá initiates in Cuba and the United States. He argues that Cuban music, art, and even politics rely on complexities of these African-inspired codes of conduct and leadership. Voice of the Leopard is an unprecedented tracing of an African title-society to its Caribbean incarnation, which has deeply influenced Cuba's creative energy and popular consciousness.

As rooted as they are in a particular immigrant experience, Cofer's writings are also rich in universal themes, especially those involving the pains, confusions, and wonders of growing up. While set in the barrio, the essays "American History," "Not for Sale," and "The Paterson Public Library" deal with concerns that could be those of any sensitive young woman coming of age in America: romantic attachments, relations with parents and peers, the search for knowledge. And in poems such as "The Life of an Echo" and "The Purpose of Nuns," Cofer offers eloquent ruminations on the mystery of desire and the conflict between the flesh and the spirit. Cofer's ambitions as a writer are perhaps stated most explicitly in the essay "The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria." Recalling one of her early poems, she notes how its message is still her mission: to transcend the limitations of language, to connect "through the human-to-human channel of art."

Since the 1960s, the Catholic Church has acted as a mediator during social and political change in many Latin American countries, especially the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Although the Catholic clergy was called in during political crises in all five countries, the situation in the Dominican Republic was especially notable because the Church's role as mediator was eventually institutionalized. Because the Dominican state was persistently weak, the Church was able to secure the support of the Balaguer regime (1966-1978) and ensure social and political cohesion and stability. Emelio Betances analyzes the particular circumstances that allowed the Church in the Dominican Republic to accommodate the political and social establishment; the Church offered non-partisan political mediation, rebuilt its ties with the lower echelons of society, and responded to the challenges of the evangelical movement. Cottrol takes the reader on a journey from the origins of New World slavery in colonial Latin America to current debates and litigation over affirmative action in Brazil and the United States, as well as contemporary struggles against racial discrimination and Afro-Latin invisibility in the Spanish-speaking nations of the hemisphere. Ranging across such topics as slavery, emancipation, scientific racism, immigration policies, racial classifications, and legal processes, Cottrol unravels a complex odyssey. By the eve of the Civil War, the U.S. slave system was rooted in a legal and cultural foundation of racial exclusion unmatched in the Western Hemisphere. That system’s legacy was later echoed in Jim Crow, the practice of legally mandated segregation.
