Book Synopsis Geoscience Education by : Clara Vasconcelos
Download or read book Geoscience Education written by Clara Vasconcelos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents research in Geoscience Education focusing on indoor and outdoor environments in which teaching geoscience gains particular relevance, significance and contextualization. The research areas that are presented throughout the thirteen chapters cover a wide variety of subjects ranging from educational resources and fieldwork to science models. Chapters discuss specific geoscience topics such as earthquakes, rocks, fossils and minerals. Other chapters present a more interdisciplinary approach addressing topics that aren’t usually examined, such as geomedicine and geoethics, with a specific focus on sustainable development and their alignment with the school curricula. Throughout the book readers can find research-based arguments illustrated with practical examples, which will help them to innovate in their curriculum development area, classroom practices and pre and in-service teachers’ education. The book challenges readers to improve Geoscience Education by changing the ways of teaching, by enabling students to exploit their natural curiosity, and by spurring a learning process that should not be confined to the classroom but rather maintained throughout life.

Book Synopsis Location-Based Marketing by : Gérard Cliquet
Download or read book Location-Based Marketing written by Gérard Cliquet and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Location-based Marketing outlines the main concepts, methods and strategies for implementing spatial marketing, also known as geomarketing. With an emphasis on the value of mapping in marketing decision-making, this book demonstrates the importance of a more spatialized view of these decisions, in order to best respond to market realities – whether local or international. The main techniques of geomarketing are presented along with an understanding of the spatial behavior of consumers, both outside the point of sale and in stores. The book further introduces the idea of a "geomarketing mix", which spatializes product innovations, merchandising, pricing and various aspects of promotion. Finally, the book defines what real georetailing comprises and develops the concept of mobile marketing based on geolocation techniques.
Book Synopsis Baron de Vastey and the Origins of Black Atlantic Humanism by : Marlene L. Daut
Download or read book Baron de Vastey and the Origins of Black Atlantic Humanism written by Marlene L. Daut and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the influential life and works of the Haitian political writer and statesman, Baron de Vastey (1781-1820), in this book Marlene L. Daut examines the legacy of Vastey’s extensive writings as a form of what she calls black Atlantic humanism, a discourse devoted to attacking the enlightenment foundations of colonialism. Daut argues that Vastey, the most important secretary of Haiti’s King Henry Christophe, was a pioneer in a tradition of deconstructing colonial racism and colonial slavery that is much more closely associated with twentieth-century writers like W.E.B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, and Aimé Césaire. By expertly forging exciting new historical and theoretical connections among Vastey and these later twentieth-century writers, as well as eighteenth- and nineteenth-century black Atlantic authors, such as Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, William Wells Brown, and Harriet Jacobs, Daut proves that any understanding of the genesis of Afro-diasporic thought must include Haiti’s Baron de Vastey.

Book Synopsis Making College Work by : Harry J. Holzer
Download or read book Making College Work written by Harry J. Holzer and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical solutions for improving higher education opportunities for disadvantaged students Too many disadvantaged college students in America do not complete their coursework or receive any college credential, while others earn degrees or certificates with little labor market value. Large numbers of these students also struggle to pay for college, and some incur debts that they have difficulty repaying. The authors provide a new review of the causes of these problems and offer promising policy solutions. The circumstances affecting disadvantaged students stem both from issues on the individual side, such as weak academic preparation and financial pressures, and from institutional failures. Low-income students disproportionately attend schools that are underfunded and have weak performance incentives, contributing to unsatisfactory outcomes for many students. Some solutions, including better financial aid or academic supports, target individual students. Other solutions, such as stronger linkages between coursework and the labor market and more structured paths through the curriculum, are aimed at institutional reforms. All students, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, also need better and varied pathways both to college and directly to the job market, beginning in high school. We can improve college outcomes, but must also acknowledge that we must make hard choices and face difficult tradeoffs in the process. While no single policy is guaranteed to greatly improve college and career outcomes, implementing a number of evidence-based policies and programs together has the potential to improve these outcomes substantially.
Book Synopsis Saving Migrant Birds by : John Faaborg
Download or read book Saving Migrant Birds written by John Faaborg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Rigorous and well defended . . . Faaborg makes many fresh and, in some cases, provocative points regarding management guidelines for migrant birds.” —Kenneth Able, Great Plains Research In the 1980s, numerous scientific surveys documented both declining bird populations, especially among Neotropical songbirds that winter in the tropics, and the loss of tropical rain forest habitat. Drawing the seemingly obvious conclusion, scientists and environmental activists linked songbird declines to loss of tropical habitats and alerted the world to an impending ecological catastrophe. Their warnings led to the establishment of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Program, also known as Partners in Flight, the self-proclaimed largest conservation effort in history. Looking back over more than a decade of efforts to save migrant birds, John Faaborg offers the first serious evaluation of the state of songbird populations today, the effectiveness of conservation programs such as Partners in Flight, and the reliability and completeness of scientific research on migrant birds. Taking neither an alarmist nor a complacent approach, he shows that many factors besides habitat loss affect bird populations and that Neotropical migrants as a group are not declining dramatically, though some species adapt to habitat alteration more successfully than others. Faaborg’s state-of-the-art survey thus clarifies the kinds of information we will need and the conservation efforts we should undertake to ensure the long-term survival of Neotropical migrant birds. “Presents a carefully and closely reasoned argument about the magnitude of the conservation problems facing migrant birds, how we can reduce these problems, and how current conservation efforts have enormous value even if there is no immediate crisis.” —Scott K. Robinson, Professor and Head, Department of Animal Biology, University of Illinois
