Book excerpt: Spanish comics represent an exciting and diverse field, yet one that is often overlooked outside of Spain. Spanish Comics offers an overview on contemporary scholarship on Spanish comics, focusing on a wide range of comics dating from the Francoist dictatorship, 1939-1975; the Political Transition, 1970-1985; and Democratic Spain since the early 1980s including the emergence of the graphic novel in 2000. Touching on themes of memory, gender, regional identities, and history, the chapters in this collection demonstrate the historical and cultural significance of Spanish comics.
Book Synopsis The Spanish Civil War by : George R. Esenwein
Download or read book The Spanish Civil War written by George R. Esenwein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-11-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting collection of primary sources on the Spanish Civil War uses military and political documents, media accounts, and contemporary propaganda to create a representative and illuminating survey of this enormously complicated event more than sixty-five years after it ended. Structured chronologically from a full introduction which delineates the field, this book ranges from the origins of the uprising against Franco through to its turbulent aftermath. It clearly outlines key points in the conflict and highlights the little-known roles of race and gender in determining the war’s outcome. The book also unearths many rare sources for the first time and reveals the variety of perspectives held by those immediately involved in the war. This is an ideal resource for all students of history and military history.
Book Synopsis We, the Anarchists! by : Stuart Christie
Download or read book We, the Anarchists! written by Stuart Christie and published by ChristieBooks.com. This book was released on 2000 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last. A serious examination of the legendary FAI. And hence, by necessity, a history and analysis of the organised anarchist movement in Spain, and its relationship with the wider labor movement. By far the best book on the subject, Christie is ruthless in his examination - from an anarchist perspective - of the theory, and practice of this loose-knit group of anarchist militants. Required reading for everyone who not only wants to understand the history of Spanish anarchism, but for those that might want to see some viable form of anarchist organisation in the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Revolution and the State by : Danny Evans
Download or read book Revolution and the State written by Danny Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the processes of revolution and state reconstruction that took place in the Republican zone during the Spanish civil war. It focuses on the radical anarchists who sought to advance the revolutionary agenda. Their activity came into conflict with the leaders of the libertarian organisations committed to the reconstruction of the Republican state following its near collapse in July 1936. This process implied participation not only in the organs of governance but also in the ideological reconstitution of the Republic as a patriarchal and national entity. Using original sources, the book shows that the opposition to this process was both broader and more ideologically consistent than has hitherto been assumed, and that, in spite of its heterogeneity, it united around a common revolutionary programme. This resistance to state reconstruction was informed by the essential insight of anarchism: that the function and purpose of the modern state cannot be transformed from within. By situating the struggles of the radical anarchists within the contested process of state reconstruction, the book affirms the continued relevance of this insight to the study of the Spanish revolution.

Book Synopsis The CNT in the Spanish Revolution by : José Peirats
Download or read book The CNT in the Spanish Revolution written by José Peirats and published by ChristieBooks.com. This book was released on 2001 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most detailed history to date of the million-strong revolutionary trade union, the CNT, and of its grassroots supporters who, in July 1936, embarked upon the most far-reaching of all 20th century revolutionary experiments. It is the history of the giddy years of political change and hope in 1930s Spain, when the so-called 'Generation of 36, ' Peirats's own generation, rose up against the oppressive structures of Spanish society. It is also a history of a revolution that failed, crushed in the jaws of its enemies on both the democratic-left and the reactionary right. Containing a bounty of original documents produced by the trade unions, revolutionary assemblies and rural and industrial collectives of the 1930s, many of which are unavailable elsewhere, and all translated into English for the first time, Peirats explores the new social, economic and cultural arrangements that were introduced in the streets, fields and factories of republican Spain. A staggering work - fully indexed and footnoted, with 20 pages of photographs. Superlatives like mandatory and monumental really fail to do this justice. A vital book about a crucial era in history.
