Book excerpt: Through his voluminous and in?uential writings, editorial activities, organi- tional leadership, intellectual acumen, and strong sense of history, Clifford - brose Truesdell III (1919–2000) was the main architect for the renaissance of - tional continuum mechanics since the middle of the twentieth century. The present collection of 42 essays and research papers pays tribute to this man of mathematics, science, and natural philosophy as well as to his legacy. The ?rst ?ve essays by B. D. Coleman, E. Giusti, W. Noll, J. Serrin, and D. Speiser were texts of addresses given by their authors at the Meeting in memory of Clifford Truesdell, which was held in Pisa in November 2000. In these essays the reader will ?nd personal reminiscences of Clifford Truesdell the man and of some of his activities as scientist, author, editor, historian of exact sciences, and principal founding member of the Society for Natural Philosophy. The bulk of the collection comprises 37 research papers which bear witness to the Truesdellian legacy. These papers cover a wide range of topics; what ties them together is the rational spirit. Clifford Truesdell, in his address upon receipt of a Birkhoff Prize in 1978, put the essence of modern continuum mechanics succinctly as “conceptual analysis, analysis not in the sense of the technical term but in the root meaning: logical criticism, dissection, and creative scrutiny.

Book excerpt: In light of the rapid fluctuations in oil prices and subsequent impact on the stability and economic perspectives of energy producing and energy importing states in the Western Hemisphere, this book stresses the urgency to integrate sustainability at the very core of national energy security strategies. From Canada to Argentina, this edited volume analyzes a series of case studies and diverging paradigms across the continent. It underlines how the relatively recent exploitation of unconventional energy sources in North America and the resulting impact on prices impact the geopolitical concerns of traditional producers. It also explains how much energy strategies are central to the development of national economies and the stability of their society. Highlighting the shortcomings in several countries even at a time of high prices, the volume makes the case for an inclusive and holistic approach to energy security that would integrate environmental concerns at its very core. This edited volume also explains how this new energy independence of the western Hemisphere affects its foreign policy with the main international actors in the field of energy whether traditional producers or consumers. Finally, it provides key insights on successful strategy towards the development of alternative sources of energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global energy scene is in a state of flux. Large-scale shifts include: the rapid deployment and steep declines in the costs of major renewable energy technologies; the growing importance of electricity in energy use across the globe; profound changes in China's economy and energy policy, moving consumption away from coal; and the continued surge in shale gas and tight oil production in the United States. These changes provide the backdrop for the World Energy Outlook-2017, which includes a full update of energy demand and supply projections to 2040 based on different scenarios. The projections are accompanied by detailed analyses of their impact on energy industries and investment, as well as implications for energy security and the environment. The report this year includes a focus on China, which examines how China's choices could reshape the global outlook for all fuels and technologies. A second focus, on natural gas, explores how the rise of shale gas and LNG are changing the global gas market as well as the opportunities and risks for gas in the transition to a cleaner energy system. Finally, the WEO-2017 introduces a major new scenario - the Sustainable Development Scenario - that outlines an integrated approach to achieving internationally agreed objectives on climate change, air quality and universal access to modern energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intersection of insurance regulation and trade agreements is of obvious significance to international competitiveness and, thereby, to national welfare. Yet until this masterful study the subject has remained virtually unexplored. Insurance Regulation in North America, far from merely addressing this important area of theory and practice, superbly balances a world of detailed analysis and commentary with deeply insightful interpretation and debate. The book's focus on insurance regulation in three countries allows the authors to approach the subject in an extraordinary depth that could not be achieved in a more global account. In the course of their treatment the authors offer the reader the following invaluable insights, among many others:analysis of the political dimension of reaching agreements and of implementing them;comparison of the three major trade agreements that apply in the North American insurance market'NAFTA, WTO agreements on financial services, and MEUFTA (the Mexico-European Union Free Trade Agreement)'with emphasis on the relationship between GATS and NAFTA principles;investigation of the clear convergence of regulatory schemes and the probable limits to harmonization;discussion of the arbitrage by which companies get around regulatory restrictions and exploit opportunities created by loopholes;clarification of the crucial issues surrounding the role of customary international law principles in investor protection obligations;discussion of the level of government and which government agencies a company must turn to in order to satisfy legal requirements;analysis of the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Mexico regarding legal effects of treaties on domestic law;commentary on the effects of demutualization and of mergers and acquisitions;discussion of the effect of the entrenchment of U.S. State regulations and the federal government's lack of clear power to force State compliance; anddescription of dispute settlement procedures between governments. Although important issues arising in each of the three countries are all covered, there is an emphasis on the Mexican market in recognition of Mexico's greater future growth potential and of the relative paucity of relevant literature in English. Major case studies that reveal processes of compliance or conflict are analyzed in detail. For insurance professionals'lawyers, business executives, and policymakers'who want to understand what international trade agreements contain, how they work, and how they affect domestic insurance regulation and business strategy in what is rapidly becoming a global market for insurance and other financial services, this book is a gold mine. Scholars and academics in insurance law and international economic law will also find here a fresh new treatise of great significance.

Book excerpt: State and Institution Building in Ukraine represents the first in-depth and comprehensive study of state building in Ukraine. As opposed to previous books, which have focused on the political and economic transformation of the Soviet successor states, this volume argues that a market economy and democracy cannot exist in the absence of an effective state and governing institutions. Ukraine was only a quasi-state within the former USSR when it declared independence in August 1991, and thus it inherited only the rudiments of what is normally considered a "modern state." The development of a viable and capable state with effective institutions was prioritized by the executive and legislative branches who understood that a democracy, civil society, rule of law, and market economy could not be created in the absence of a genuine, functioning state. This study is the first to survey institution and state building in Ukraine by placing it within a comparative and theoretical perspective, challenging many of the current misconceptions about Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture : "Mexico has witnessed major demographic, social, and economic changes since the 1960s. In this context, the distinct roles of men and women have also changed, as exemplifies by female labor force participation, which almost tripled in the second half of the 20th century. However, traditional gender roles continue to constrain men's and women's opportunities and well-being in Mexico. [The book] examines these issues from a life-cycle and economic perspective. It looks at the way traditional gender roles shape male and female economic activities and outcomes, beginning whith school-age children and their education patterns, continuing with the labor force participation of adults in rural and urban areas, and ending with the situation of elderly men and women. The book contains new material on changes in the maquiladora sector - which has historically provided important work opportunities for women - as well as the distinct impact of ejido reform on rural men and women."
