To some extent these tow aims are contradictory. On the one hand, one seeks to understand: what did Durkheim really mean, how did he see the world, how did his ideas related to one another and how did they develop, how did they related to their biographical and historical context, how were they received, what influence did they have and to what criticism were they subjected, what was it like not to make certain distinctions, not to see certain errors, of fact or of logic, not to know what has subsequently become known? On the other hand, one seeks to assess: how valuable and how valid are the ideas, to what fruitful insights and explanations do they lead, how do they stand up to analysis and to the evidence, what is their present value? Yet it seems that it is only by inducing oneself not to see and only by seeing them that one can make a critical assessment. The only solution is to pursue both aims--seeing and not seeing--simultaneously. More particularly, this book has the primary object of achieving that sympathetic understanding without which no adequate critical assessment is possible. It is a study in intellectual history which is also intended as a contribution to sociological theory.

La evolución pedagógica en Francia fue originalmente escrita para un curso de Pedagogía que Émile Durkheim impartió en la Universidad de La Sorbona entre 1904 y 1905. Su discípulo Maurice Halbwachs lo publicó por primera vez en 1938. Durkheim vivió en un periodo marcado por importantes reformas educativas que caracterizaron a la Tercera República francesa y que se iniciaron con las leyes de enseñanza primaria gratuita, obligatoria y laica establecidas por el ministro Jules Ferry (1881 y 1882). El curso que impartió Durkheim en La Sorbona se relaciona con una reforma de la enseñanza secundaria que se llevó a cabo en 1902 y que introdujo disciplinas más "modernas" en el currículum de este nivel de enseñanza. Iba dirigido a los futuros profesores agregados de los Liceos, con el fin de enriquecer su formación profesional y clarificar los objetivos de la enseñanza secundaria. Según Durkheim, las instituciones educativas concretas, ligadas firmemente a su medio social, producen tipos humanos diferentes en función de las necesidades de cada uno de dichos medios. Así es como establece tres fases del sistema educativo francés, a cada uno de los cuales corresponde un sujeto humano distinto: Escolástica (buen cristiano), Renacimiento (personalidad individualizada de los humanistas) y Realismo (científicos y trabajadores industriales). Su intención es explicar cómo se plantearon los hechos educativos bajo la presión de las circunstancias y del medio social, qué soluciones prevalecieron, cuáles fueron las consecuencias y qué enseñanzas se deben sacar de todo ello. En definitiva, Durkheim buscó en el pasado las lecciones que debía aprovechar el presente, única vía sólida para abrir el camino a nuevos ideales educativos más acordes con los nuevos tiempos, con la nueva sociedad del siglo XX. Esta obra es por tanto imprescindible para comprender la teoría sociológica de la educación de Durkheim, definida por él como la ciencia de las instituciones educativas, de su génesis y de su funcionamiento.
