Book excerpt: El objetivo fundamental de nuestra tesis doctoral consiste en concebir la obra del pensador Ernst Jünger como una respuesta al problema del nihilismo, ya anunciado por Nietzsche, considerando el conjunto de su obra no sólo como un diagnóstico del estado nihilista que afecta a Occidente, sino también como su tratamiento y cura. Por otro lado, hemos valorado y enjuiciado críticamente la validez y la viabilidad de su programa filosófico de la metafísica de la Gestalt como superación del nihilismo, analizando los supuestos epistemológicos que sustentan dicho programa.Teniendo presente estos objetivos, en el primer capítulo hemos analizado, en primer lugar, las razones que justifican la desconfianza de Jünger respecto al programa racionalista y positivista de constituir y edificar una sociedad fundamentalmente buena, segura y razonable, y, en segundo lugar, hemos constatado en la obra de Jünger la necesidad de ensayar nuevas formas de conocimiento y dominio de la Naturaleza, no ya a través de la razón, sino de la intuición y de la experiencia, que permitan la fundación de un nuevo cosmopolitismo político, superando con ello el estado nihilista europeo. En el segundo capítulo hemos descrito la naturaleza y el funcionamiento de ese cosmopolitismo, revisando críticamente los fundamentos metafísicos en los que se sustenta. Finalmente, en el tercer capítulo hemos definido y cuestionado la teoría moral de la resistencia que Jünger propone como vía de superación del nihilismo y de los totalitarismos políticos del pasado siglo.

Book excerpt: "The Necessity of Atheism" is a treatise on atheism by the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, printed in 1811 by C. and W. Phillips in Worthing while Shelley was a student at University College, Oxford. A copy of the first version was sent as a short tract signed enigmatically to all heads of Oxford colleges at the University. At that time the content was so shocking to the authorities that he was "rusticated" (expelled from the University) for refusing to deny authorship, together with his friend and fellow student, Thomas Jefferson Hogg. A revised and expanded version was printed in 1813. Shelley's early profession of atheism in this tract not only led to his expulsion from Oxford but also branded him as a radical agitator and thinker, setting an early pattern of marginalisation and ostracism from the intellectual and political circles of his time. Though Shelley's poetry and prose output remained steady throughout his life, most publishers and journals declined to publish his work for fear of being arrested themselves for blasphemy or sedition. Shelley did not live to see success and influence in his time, although these reach down to the present day not only in literature, but in major movements in social and political thought.

Book excerpt: What can the universals of political philosophy offer to those who experience "the living paradox of an inegalitarian construction of egalitarian citizenship"? Citizen Subject is the summation of Étienne Balibar’s career-long project to think the necessary and necessarily antagonistic relation between the categories of citizen and subject. In this magnum opus, the question of modernity is framed anew with special attention to the self-enunciation of the subject (in Descartes, Locke, Rousseau, and Derrida), the constitution of the community as “we” (in Hegel, Marx, and Tolstoy), and the aporia of the judgment of self and others (in Foucualt, Freud, Kelsen, and Blanchot). After the “humanist controversy” that preoccupied twentieth-century philosophy, Citizen Subject proposes foundations for philosophical anthropology today, in terms of two contrary movements: the becoming-citizen of the subject and the becoming-subject of the citizen. The citizen-subject who is constituted in the claim to a “right to have rights” (Arendt) cannot exist without an underside that contests and defies it. He—or she, because Balibar is concerned throughout this volume with questions of sexual difference—figures not only the social relation but also the discontent or the uneasiness at the heart of this relation. The human can be instituted only if it betrays itself by upholding “anthropological differences” that impose normality and identity as conditions of belonging to the community. The violence of “civil” bourgeois universality, Balibar argues, is greater (and less legitimate, therefore less stable) than that of theological or cosmological universality. Right is thus founded on insubordination, and emancipation derives its force from otherness. Ultimately, Citizen Subject offers a revolutionary rewriting of the dialectic of universality and differences in the bourgeois epoch, revealing in the relationship between the common and the universal a political gap at the heart of the universal itself.

Book excerpt: The catastrophic economic, social and political crisis of our time calls for a new and original critique of political economy - a rethinking of Marx's project in the very different conditions of twenty-first century capitalism. Stiegler argues that today the proletarian must be reconceptualized as the economic agent whose knowledge and memory are confiscated by machines. This new sense of the term ‘proletarian' is best understood by reference to Plato's critique of exteriorized memory. By bringing together Plato and Marx, Stiegler can show how a generalized proletarianization now encompasses not only the muscular system, as Marx saw it, but also the nervous system of the so-called creative workers in the information industries. The proletarians of the former are deprived of their practical know-how, whereas the latter are shorn of their theoretical practice, and both suffer from a confiscation of the very possibility of a genuine art of living. But the mechanisms at work in this new and accentuated form of proletarianization are the very mechanisms that may spur a reversal of the process. Such a reversal would imply a crucial distinction between one's life work, originating in otium (leisure devoted to the techniques of the self), and the job, consisting in a negotium (the negotiation and calculation, increasingly restricted to short-term expectations), leading to the necessity of a new conception of economic value. This short text offers an excellent introduction to Stiegler's work while at the same time representing a political call to arms in the face of a deepening economic and social crisis.
