Book excerpt: The "Fourth European Symposium on Organic Micropollutants in the Aquatic Environment" was held in Vienna (Austria) from 22 to 24 October 1985. The Symposium was organized wi thin the framework of the Concerted Action COST 641* which is included in the Third R&D Programme on the Environment of the Commission of the European Communities. The aim of the Symposium was to review recent scientific and technical progress in the area of organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment and to present relevant research papers related to analytical methodologies, transformation reactions and transport of organic micropollutants in water, and water treatment processes. A special session was devoted to theoretical aspects and future acti vi ties. Furthermore, special poster sessions were organized where original contributions were presented. This book presents the Proceedings of the Symposium including all review papers, presentations of research papers and extended versions of all posters. We believe that these Proceedings provide a good overview of the activities in this field in Europe. We are confident that it will constitute a valuable contribution to the understanding and solution of the problems posed by organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment. The Commission of the European Communi ties whishes to express its grati tude to the co-organizers of the Symposium, Bundesministerium fUr Gesundheit und Umweltschutz, Wien, and Der Osterreichische Wasserwirtschaftsverband.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melding the fields of literature, sociology, and history, this book develops analyses of the ten novels in Balzac's Scènes de la vie de province. Following the order of the novels projected in La Comédie humaine, Allan H. Pasco investigates how Balzac used art as a tool of social inquiry to obtain startlingly accurate insights into the relationships that defined his turbulent society. His repeated claim to be an "historian of manners" was more than an empty boast. Though Balzac was first and foremost a great novelist, he was also a trailblazing sociologist, joining Henri de Saint-Simon and the subsequent Auguste Comte in considering the relationships that represent society as an interacting, interlocking web. Using a methodology that combines close analysis with a broad cultural context, Pasco demonstrates that Balzac's sociological vision was extraordinarily pertinent to both his and our days.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of France’s most famous historians compares two exemplars of political and military leadership to make the unfashionable case that individuals, for better and worse, matter in history. Historians have taught us that the past is not just a tale of heroes and wars. The anonymous millions matter and are active agents of change. But in democratizing history, we have lost track of the outsized role that individual will and charisma can play in shaping the world, especially in moments of extreme tumult. Patrice Gueniffey provides a compelling reminder in this powerful dual biography of two transformative leaders, Napoleon Bonaparte and Charles de Gaulle. Both became national figures at times of crisis and war. They were hailed as saviors and were eager to embrace the label. They were also animated by quests for personal and national greatness, by the desire to raise France above itself and lead it on a mission to enlighten the world. Both united an embattled nation, returned it to dignity, and left a permanent political legacy—in Napoleon’s case, a form of administration and a body of civil law; in de Gaulle’s case, new political institutions. Gueniffey compares Napoleon’s and de Gaulle’s journeys to power; their methods; their ideas and writings, notably about war; and their postmortem reputations. He also contrasts their weaknesses: Napoleon’s limitless ambitions and appetite for war and de Gaulle’s capacity for cruelty, manifested most clearly in Algeria. They were men of genuine talent and achievement, with flaws almost as pronounced as their strengths. As many nations, not least France, struggle to find their soul in a rapidly changing world, Gueniffey shows us what a difference an extraordinary leader can make.

Book excerpt: Most of the diadromous fish of the world have decreased in distribution and abundance since the beginning of the twentieth century. They are now threatened, and important conservation issues arise. The causes of these trends vary among species and basins but regional human impact (damming, pollution, fisheries) and global change (climate) are suspected to be responsible for these difficulties. This book contains selected papers from an international symposium organised by the Diadfish network held in Bordeaux (France) in 2005. Readers will find up-to-date information on the ecology, ecotoxicology and physiology of several diadromous species (Atlantic salmon, shads, lampreys, eels) and this whole group in Europe. Main impacts are also documented and analysed in case studies, and solutions or remediation actions are presented.

But in early modern France they were called into question, as writers such as La Rochefoucauld argued that what appears as virtue is in fact disguised vice. Disguised Vices analyses the underlying logic of such claims, and explores what is at stake in them.
