Il 31 ottobre 1517 il monaco agostiniano Martin Lutero affigge le sue 95 tesi alla porta della chiesa del castello di Wittenberg. L’intento è proporre un dibattito teologico, di tipo accademico, su una questione i cui fondamenti non sono affatto chiari. L’aspetto più sensibile per il popolo cristiano riguarda la grande campagna per le indulgenze indetta da papa Leone X al fine di ricostruire con grande sfarzo la basilica di San Pietro a Roma. Avendo bisogno di molto denaro, promuove in tutt’Europa, e in modo particolare in Germania, una campagna che concede «indulgenze» in cambio di generose elemosine. La predicazione si sposta così dalle grandi verità della fede ai benefici spirituali di una pratica penitenziale dando l’impressione che la salvezza cristiana si possa barattare in cambio di denaro. La Chiesa cattolica continua ancora oggi a insegnare e praticare la dottrina delle indulgenze e lo fa in maniera festosa in occasione degli anni santi. Anche se quella pratica non dà più luogo ad alcun abuso di tipo finanziario e la teologia in questo campo si è notevolmente affinata, la questione non è mai stata oggetto di un dialogo chiarificatore.

The book demonstrates that the majority of the extant institutional narratives were written by Observant Dominicans, who strived for the internal reform of their order. They wrote history to justify their own reform agenda and therefore produced invariably partisan chronicles. The work's method is widely applicable and contributes to further reassessment of institutional narratives as sources for the analysis of religious and intellectual transformations.
