Book Synopsis Peace, Security and Post-conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa by : Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo
Download or read book Peace, Security and Post-conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa written by Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes region of Africa is characterized by protest politics, partial democratization, political illegitimacy and unstable economic growth. Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of savage capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.

Book Synopsis The Crisis of Representative Democracy by : International Progress Organization
Download or read book The Crisis of Representative Democracy written by International Progress Organization and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1987 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideological background and the deficiencies of the concept of representation are being analyzed. It is shown that the present crisis of the Western democratic system is to be attributed to the form of oligarchy which has developed as a result of the «dogma of representation». The fictitious character of representation is being elaborated on the ontological, psychological and normative levels. An analysis of present and historical forms of parliamentary systems (as examples for the ideology of representation) is followed by a reflection on possible alternatives to this traditional system of power. Various forms of direct democracy are examined in regard to their practicability.

Book Synopsis Care Staff Mobilisation in the Hospital by : Ivan Sainsaulieu
Download or read book Care Staff Mobilisation in the Hospital written by Ivan Sainsaulieu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a novel examination of the relations, actions, and practices of healthcare workers, analysed in terms of collective mobilisation. Based on successive surveys conducted over a twenty-year period in public and private hospitals, it brings a rich new conceptualisation of both social movements and care work. We’ve all witnessed the collective mobilisation at play in hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. In such a structured, hierarchical environment, the parallel with social movements highlights the ethical and collective dimensions of care work, as well as the bonds of solidarity and identification with the collective. Yet, healthcare workers are often caught in a dilemma between fighting against underfunding and deteriorating working conditions on the one hand, and cooperating to keep the system standing and provide the best care possible for patients on the other. The author's approach in terms of consensual and conflictual mobilisations brings a fresh theoretical and empirical contribution to the literature on social movements, medical sociology, public health, and the sociology of labour, whilst in-depth case studies bring to light the experiences of healthcare workers and enrich the narrative throughout.
