Book Synopsis Diccionario de la Democracia by : Patricio Marcos
Download or read book Diccionario de la Democracia written by Patricio Marcos and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Will of the People by : Yanina Welp
Download or read book The Will of the People written by Yanina Welp and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Will of the People: Populism and Citizen Participation in Latin America argues that while populist leaders typically claim to speak 'in the name of the people', they rarely allow the people to express their opinion independently through institutions of citizen participation. The argument is rooted in theoretical discussions and empirical analyses of trends and specific cases. The volume deals with the following questions: Why is populism so prolific in the Latin American region? How and where do populist leaders arrive to power? Is there a connection between populism and fascism as claimed by negative views of Argentinian Peronism? Are populist leaders more keen on introducing mechanisms of direct citizen participation? Are the erosions of the political party system an explanation of the emergence of populism, as seems to be the case with Fujimorism in Peru? To what extent have the governments of Hugo Chávez, Evo Morales and Rafael Correa given voice to the people through the so-called participatory democracy?

Book Synopsis A Persistent Revolution by : Randal Sheppard
Download or read book A Persistent Revolution written by Randal Sheppard and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheppard explores Mexico’s profound political, social, and economic changes through the lens of the persistent political power of Mexican revolutionary nationalism. By examining the major events and transformations in Mexico since 1968, he shows how historical myths such as the Mexican Revolution, Benito Juárez, and Emiliano Zapata as well as Catholic nationalism emerged during historical-commemoration ceremonies, in popular social and anti-neoliberal protest movements, and in debates between commentators, politicians, and intellectuals. Sheppard provides a new understanding of developments in Mexico since 1968 by placing these events in their historical context. The work further contributes to understandings of nationalism more generally by showing how revolutionary nationalism in Mexico functioned during a process of state dismantling rather than state building, and it shows how nationalism could serve as a powerful tool for non-elites to challenge the actions of those in power or to justify new citizenship rights as well as for elites seeking to ensure political stability.
Book Synopsis Presidential Campaigns in Latin America by : Taylor C. Boas
Download or read book Presidential Campaigns in Latin America written by Taylor C. Boas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taylor C. Boas argues that new democracies are likely to develop nationally specific approaches to electioneering through success contagion. The theory of success contagion holds that the first elected president to complete a successful term in office establishes a national model of campaign strategy that other candidates will adopt in future.
Book Synopsis The Friendly Liquidation of the Past by : Donna Lee Van Cott
Download or read book The Friendly Liquidation of the Past written by Donna Lee Van Cott and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutional reform has been one of the most significant aspects of democratization in late twentieth century Latin America. In The Friendly Liquidation of the Past—one of the first texts to examine this issue comprehensively —Van Cott focuses on the efforts of Bolivia and Colombia to incorporate ethnic rights into their fragile democracies. In the1990s, political leaders and social movements in Bolivia and Colombia expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of democracy--its exclusionary nature, the distance and illegitimacy of the state, and the empty promise of citizenship. The highly symbolic act of constitution making elevated a public struggle for rights to the level of a discussion on the meaning of democracy and the nature of the state. Based on interviews with more than 100 participants in the reforms, Van Cott demonstrates how issues promoted by social movements—recognizing ethnic diversity, expanding political participation and improving representation, and creating spheres of cultural and territorial autonomy—were placed on the constitutional reform agenda and transformed through strategic interaction with political power-brokers into the nation’s highest law. The analysis follows each reform through five years of implementation to assess the early results of what Van Cott suggests is an emerging regional model of multicultural constitutionalism. The Friendly Liquidation of the Past fills an important gap in the study of ethnic politics and constitutional reform in the Andes, linking the literature on institutions and political reform to work in political theory on participatory democracy and multiculturalism.
