Longtemps occultée, on découvre une grande littérature mystique de langue française. Olier s'interrogeait : et si, à travers sa plume, quelqu'un d'autre écrivait ? Cet Esprit étranger, faisant irruption dans son âme à l'improviste, explosait en un cri : " Va-t'en ! Je veux écrire en toi ! ". L'homme n'est " presque rien ". Pourtant il est quelque chose, car bien qu'incomplet, être manquant, toujours nécessiteux, il représente l'élément d'un dessein plus grand que lui, la petite pièce d'un puzzle divin que M. Olier souhaite reconstituer. Le maître de Saint-Sulpice ne pouvait pas cacher son enthousiasme face à sa découverte merveilleuse : " Hélas ! Mangeons en cet abîme, buvons à même de la source. Gorgeons-nous de délices et de plaisirs, soûlons-nous de ces viandes ", s'exclamait-il. Loin de faire de la philosophie ou de la théologie, Olier atteint d'une façon naïve les plus hautes cimes du langage mystique.

As a reaction against this view, an opposite «sociological» approach downplayed the usual virtues of scientific knowledge (such as logical rigor and empirical adequacy) as artificial imageries that cover the actual nature of science, that is a social product submitted to all the kinds of social conditionings and compromises. A more balanced view is badly needed today, when technoscience is permeating all aspects of our civilization and wise persons understand that we cannot survive without using science and technology but at the same time we need to steer their development in view of the real benefit of humankind.
